Synopsis: Upon formation of the Kingdom of Marksylvania, King Eleazar named a Half-Elf knight, Sir Aaron as the first Duke of Helios’ Valley. Lysa is an Orc being trained as a Paladin by Duke Aaron. Helios’ Valley had been ruled by an insane wizard that experimented on mixing races through wizardry. Some of his creations were the Talminor, which were a mix of three races. Aaron and Lysa led a group into Helios’ Valley in an attempt to save some Talminor who were dying as the magic that had constructed them began to erode. Having encountered a strange race of Oriental Elves called the Hutcaiah while exploring Helios’ Valley, Lysa was thrown into a magical pool that could split apart someone along racial lines and even reassemble them with the DNA of a being that was killed and thrown into the pool earlier. Lysa left the pool seemingly with a mixture of the DNA of an Orc and that of a Hutcaiah princess that had been executed and tossed into the pool earlier. But now the two types of DNA, held together for a while by the magic of the pool, are beginning to react and conflict with each other. Meanwhile, the Hutcaiah Emperor, learned in his kingdom far away, that his eldest son and heir to the throne was killed by Duke Aaron in Helios’ Valley.
1. Infirmity
“There has to be something that can be done!” Aaron said to the Reverend Mother in the sitting room of the ducal suite. “Aaron I have tried everything that I know to do to help her and nothing is working. Healing spells do not seem to have any effect.” “Is she dying?” He asked the Drow Cleric in almost a whisper. “Child, I don’t know. But do not give up hope! Sophia arrives this afternoon and I am certain she will be able to think of something to help.” “If Yesh allows her to do so.” The Paladin commented bitterly. He didn’t want to sound so negative, but four days of stress had taken its toll on the young Half-Elf. “He will, child, take heart! Our God is full of mercy and compassion.” “Then why did Lysa have to go through this, Reverend Mother? She seemed fine when I found her in my room and even the following day she didn’t seem sick or as if anything was wrong. Then the day after that, she suddenly started feeling weak and she said that her body ached. I thought it was some sort of virus - something like the flu. When she suddenly couldn’t see anymore and she started convulsing, it scared me to death! Why would Yesh allow her to go through this? If it is a result of what happened to her in the Pool of Purity, shouldn’t it have happened immediately?”
Zeatt gently touched Aaron on the shoulders in a motherly fashion, “Aaron, I can’t answer any of those questions. But Sophia and Khord may know more than I do and Flux is much more advanced than Westmark. I feel she will know what to do.” “But what if she doesn’t, Reverend Mother? Lysa keeps swelling up --- you cannot see much of her face anymore. If she keeps swelling, she won’t be able to breathe. I fear her heart will burst from the effort! We’ve got to find a way to stop it.” “Aaron, we don’t even know exactly what is happening to her. Her skin has peeled off twice in four days, and both times the new skin is a lighter shade of green than before. She could be continuing to change - perhaps the changing process was only begun by her exposure in the Faerie Pool.” “But when will it end, Reverend Mother? Her body can’t take much more of this. I fear she may have already been physically damaged by the fever and her rapid heart rate. I’m scared for her, Reverend Mother.” Zeatt smiled sympathetically and embraced the young Paladin, “Aaron, we will do all we can to save her and restore her. You must have faith, child. Go back inside and sit with her and Bruce. He is scared too, you know. Comfort him.” “He blames me for her condition, Reverend Mother. Oh, he hasn’t said anything to me, for he’s too disciplined and respectful, but he blames me. Lysa told me that when he saw her the day after she had been in the pool, he was quite upset.” “Aaron, it wasn’t your fault that she was thrown into that pool. Bruce knows that -he is not stupid. He is just scared for his sister. He loves her too, you know.” Aaron looked at the Drow lady, but didn’t even try to deny his feelings for his squire. Zeatt wasn’t judging him but was trying to encourage his faith in a motherly fashion. Aaron sighed, “You’re right, Reverend Mother. I am sorry that I am so upset. I haven’t slept since she slipped into that coma. Bruce hasn’t either. I’ll go see if he will go get some rest while I sit with her. Pray for us, Reverend Zeatt, for I fear Bruce and I could end up butting heads over this whole thing.” “I am continually praying for you and for Bruce, child. As well as Lysa. Do not fear, but seek Yesh in prayer. I must go and attend to other things, but I will check back in an hour. The servants can summon me if anything changes and I’ll be here in a minute’s time. Be strong, Aaron, Yesh hasn’t abandoned you… or Lysa.” “I hope so, Reverend Mother.” He replied, fearful that he didn’t believe it. © 2015 Eddie DavisReviews
