“Let’s rest.” I said.  I really didn’t need to sit, just looking for an excuse to light another cigarette.

“You smoke quite a bit.”  Isla remarked.

“Actually I quit.”  I explained “I used the book and it worked but,” I chuckled “the book didn’t prepare me for this.”

“Well,” Isla sat down on the seat opposite to me “my legs could use a rest.”

Isla stared at me for what could have been hours “I’ve seen you before.”

“Pardon?” Like I was awoken from a bad dream.

“You lived over in the Beaches.”

Isla was getting exited about her revelation, who could blame her?  A familiar connection amongst this horrid mess something found, amongst all that seems lost.

“I used to run the neighborhood restaurant.”  I said “The Afterlife.”

“Yeah,” Isla’s connection was almost complete “what happened to that place?’

“I never knew that the owners’ liquor license paperwork was nonexistent.”  I explained “The permit was a forgery.”

“That sucks.”  Isla grimaced

“It was the most fun I ever had.”  I laughed “All those cops running around confiscating liquor.  I even got to shower some of them with beer.  When they left, they had forgotten to take the bar stock so the bartender, the dishwasher and I got drunk and ate well.”

“All this talk has made me hungry.”  Isla grimaced looking around “I’d even eat Jell-O.”

“Well we should keep moving up to the front.”  I drearily said “We’ll look for food on our way.”

Well we got on our way and I kept thinking why did it have to be this way?  Finally after all this time I get to talk to Isla and the world may not exist.  ‘The Last Man on Earth’ pun ran true through my head.  There wasn’t much in the way of food on this car but the next car.  PAY DIRT!  This was what the soul needed, one two-four of Black Label, a bag of chips, some canned sardines, pop and some thawed out frozen foods.  What was better than finding all this food?  Finding all this food and a bundle buggy!  It seems the corpse with good taste in beer was smart and used a buggy to safely transport the liquid gold.  I wanted to stop now and drink myself into oblivion.  I had seen enough in this short time that I knew it was like this all over.  Life was all over.
