AbductedA Story by Janyce Helen Van EsGrief-stricken, I followed the wolf to his den, carrying my prized, gray Persian kitten in his sharp, menacing teeth. She wasn’t able to cry out, her throat was being pierced too tightly. I knew she was doomed if I didn’t take action quickly, knowing well that wolves in my region hunted cats occasionally.
With the wind blowing towards me, I watched as the two gray creatures disappeared into a small cave. First there was a small whimper and then, quiet. I cried to myself, thinking my poor little kitten was digesting inside some hungry predator.
The large wolf left the den and moved on to a different location. All I had was a pepper-spray and a flashlight.
Creeping slowly into the cave, I took the flashlight and tip-toed into the cave, hoping not to be noticed by the female. When my eyes became adjusted to the dimness, I saw what happened to my kitten. She was quietly nursing on the female wolf. Her two small pups lay dead in the corner with buckshot. I felt humiliation, thinking the worst for my pet. I left them and quietly made my way back home. I didn’t have the heart to take the kitten away. Tears filled my eyes, acknowledging the mother’s loss.
I called the animal rescue squad in my area to come pick up the wolves, telling them they were in danger. When they arrived, the male had already brought her another kitten to nurse. The ASPCA took the four, including the two kittens, to a refuge for wild animals. The officer said I was being honorable giving up my pet.
The officer chuckled, “Wait until the kittens breed in the refuge. It’ll cut down on the cost of food during the long winter months." © 2008 Janyce Helen Van EsReviews
