You're Never Going Back the Old Way

You're Never Going Back the Old Way

A Poem by Of This Earth

Lessons don't come

on correct scantrons.

They're not buttoned up

-hair slicked back,

dishes put away.

No-They're more like

wind leveling trees.

One minute you're looking up

and the next-not so much.

Jobs left with the cash register

still open.

Anonymous inaccuracies

suddenly on the front page.

Your friends don't know

what to say and

You're never going

back to the old way.

Even if you wanted to-

the path is washed away.
