Peter- Part 1- Chapter 6

Chapter 6

          “Get him, boys! Don’t let him get away,” Kyle screams. Peter runs away as fast as his legs can carry him. It’s gym class and they are playing dodge ball. Peter hates that Kyle, Johnny, Nathan, and Steve are in his gym class. Everyone in class is after him. They plan to hit him first and then go after the other kids. Peter is pretty good at dodging.

          Peter runs across the gym. He’s waiting for someone to hit him with the ball. He really wants to be out of the game already. His own team members are working against him. He can feel the hate spewing from everyone’s mouth.

          “Hit him already,” some guy on his team says, “I want to play fairly already.”

          Kyle throws the ball hard towards Peter. Peter tries to dodge it, but it hits him square in the face. Kyle and Johnny give each other high fives. Peter feels blood starting to pour down his nose. Kyle really got him good with that throw. Peter asks the teacher if he can go to the bathroom. The teacher gives him a pass to go. Peter wipes the blood off his nose. Peter questions why the gym teacher didn’t tell them to play fair. Is his teacher not paying attention to what’s going on? Gym is a horrible period for him. His bullying gets worse every single class. More people have been tripping him lately. He splashes water on his face.

          He walks back to the gym and sits on the bleachers. He sighs and watches the game. Right now, no one is bothering him since he’s out of the game. He’s also happy his teacher isn’t forcing him to play again. His teacher can feel the tension coming off him. “Hey, wimp why aren’t you playing dodge ball anymore?”

          The teacher yells at them to stop harassing Peter. That’s only going to make it worse for him. As soon as the bell rings, Peter rushes towards his locker. He keeps his head down while he’s walking. He doesn’t want people to know it’s him. He can hear people whispering and saying things about him. “Did you hear that Peter got a nosebleed today? People are saying that Kyle pelted him with the ball so hard Peter started crying. Peter is such a crybaby. Can’t he take pain like a man?”

Peter can hear laughing after the statement. He knows people want him to hear, but he’s going to try to ignore them. He’s going to show them how strong he is. He wants to show them that he isn’t broken. Most of the time he does feel like he’s broken. At this moment in time, he’s feeling strong. He didn’t cry when the ball hit him. His brain is trying to work against him though. The negative thoughts are trying to tell him that he’s useless. That no one wants him or needs him. He tries to push the thoughts away.

          People are still laughing as he walks by. The people laughing at him aren’t helping his mental state. It’s making it worse for him to tune out the negative thoughts. Peter feels his anxiety start to rear its ugly head. He really needs to get some air. He feels trapped in a bubble. Some people are simply ignoring him. He’s glad. He rather be ignored than deal with people making fun of him or laughing at him.

          Peter can’t wait for the day to be over. He walks to his final class of the day. It’s history. Peter loves learning about history, but he doesn’t like the class he’s in. Kyle is also in this class. Kyle makes fun of him every chance he gets. Especially when the teacher isn’t paying attention. Some of the kids throw spit balls at him. The teacher always has a lot of notes to write on the board.

          Peter is happy when the final bell rings. He’s excited he gets to walk home today. Damien has football practice and can’t drive him. Peter is okay with that. He can get the fresh air he needs. Peter is in dreamland when he’s tripped. He falls on his face while some of the other kids laugh at him again. Johnny is the one who tripped him this time. His face starts feeling hot. “Well, well, look who it is boys, Little Peter. Just the person I’m looking for.”

          “What do you want with me, Johnny?” Peter asks in an annoyed tone. He tries to stand up, but Kyle kicks him back down. He does it every time Peter tries to stand up. Haven’t they caused him enough embarrassment for the day? He pegged him in the face with a ball earlier. Can’t they just leave him alone now?

Peter is going to try to stand up himself. He’s not in the mood to deal with Kyle’s gang. Kyle backs away from Peter when Johnny moves closer to him. Johnny spits on the ground next to Peter’s head. Johnny then proceeds to kick Peter as hard as he can in the stomach. The wind is knocked out of Peter. He also feels a great deal of pain.

          “What do you think I want? I want to teach you a lesson,” Johnny says while laughing. He pins Peter to the ground. Peter tries to break free from Johnny’s pin. Peter’s having a really hard time doing so. He’s in a lot of pain from being kicked in the stomach. Johnny punches Peter once before being pulled off him. Damien has come to Peter’s rescue.

          “Don’t you have to go to football practice, Johnny,” Damien asks in a heated tone. Damien can feel his blood boiling. He tries to calm himself down before looking over at the other kids watching. When they see the look Damien is giving them, they walk away quickly.

          “Yeah, yeah,” Johnny says. He starts to walk towards the locker room. His shoulders slump a little. Johnny wasn’t happy to be interrupted.

          “Are you alright, Peter,” Damien asks. Damien puts his hands behind his head. Peter gets off the ground. His stomach still hurts pretty bad. He also dusts off his outfit. Peter sighs and starts walking away. Damien grabs his shoulder. “Didn’t you hear me ask you a question?”

          “I did and I really have no answer for you, Damien. I’ll see you later,” Peter says while walking away. Tears are starting to trickle down his cheeks. He really doesn’t want anyone else to see his tears. They all would just laugh at him again.
