My mind whirled with possibilities. What could they possibly be after ?
One thing was for certain. We wouldn't be getting away from them in Mom's old beat up Ford Mustang. The thing could barely do 50mph and shuddered terribly even when it could reach that speed.
The ambulances behind us had to have been outfitted with modified engines as they easily roared past and around us, cutting us off from taking any evasive actions.
I could see we were going to wind up getting injured if we continued to try and and drive so I spoke.
"Mom, put on the brakes. Let's see what's going on here."
She looked at me with fearful eyes, but she knew I was right.
"No sense flipping the car I guess." she said and carefully pulled over to the curb.
The ambulances stopped. One in front and back. Two orderlies got out of each and came to our car.
"Was I speeding, officer ?" Mom said hoping to break the tense mood.
"Get out." was all the first one said, motioning with a handgun.
She did and looking in the back window, I saw one wheel out two gurneys.
"Get up there." the first orderly told Mom.
"You're not going to hurt my baby ?" she asked with pleading eyes.
"Long as you behave. Now get up there, woman !"
She sat on the gurney. At once the 2nd orderly came by and started to hook up an IV to her wrist jabbing a sharp needle there.
"What is this - " but that was as far as she got when her head reeled dizzily and she fell back on the gurney.
I stepped out of the Ford angrily from the passenger side, ready for a fight.
"What did you do to her !?" I demanded.
The third approached me, "She'll be fine, sleeping, long as you behave yourself, understand ?"
I couldn't fight them here. I had no doubt these creeps would kill my Mom if they didn't get their way.
"What do you want ?" I asked.
The first pointed a gloved hand back at me. "Right now we just need you !"
I could see the 2nd gurney was being readied with an IV bag. It was ready for me !
I bit my lip, "Let her go if you just need me ! I'll cooperate."
The first approached and threatened me with the handgun, "It doesn't work that way, kid. We were told to get both of you."
"Who ! Who told you to do this !?"
"You'll find that out later. For now, and for the SAFETY of your Mom, get your butt up on that gurney !"
There was little I could do. Already the second orderly was checking the vitals on my Mom and wheeling her back into his ambulance.
I obeyed. "Same thing." he said, "Give me your arm."
I complied. He hooked up a needle to it with an additional IV. He adjusted the flow and then looked at me.
Strangely I felt no different. He was getting agitated though fingering around his pistol, nervously. Apparently something was supposed to happen.
I better fake it I thought and acted like Mom, dizzy, then falling back.
"Good." he said. "For a moment I thought it wouldn't work."
"Why is that ?" a different unknown voice asked.
"When they get like this, very little affects them. I'll - fill you in on the way back."
The voices faded slightly. I heard the engine of my Mom's car starting up. Apparently they were going to drive it in the ditch so no-one could find it.
"We're done here !" I heard his voice much louder now.
"Let's get back." With that I heard the back door to the ambulance slam, where I was.
I heard the 2nd new voice, "You were going to tell me ?"
The first leaned back in a chair there causing it to creak.
"Oh yeah. Here, you can speak with Divan."
I heard an intercom speaker crackle to life.
"Divan, you there ?"
* * * A 3rd new voice spoke on the speaker, "Did you get him, Clancy ?"
The first orderly, Clancy, nodded, "Yeah, we got him. And his Mother too."
"It's important you have both." the 3rd voice spoke. "Any problems ?"
The first shook his head, "No. Getting them both like that, they all behaved, each worried for the other."
"Excellent."
"Say ah, was wondering if you would tell Mitch here what's going on ?"
The voice on the intercom spoke, "Mitch. That boy has Class AB Double Negative blood."
Mitch scratched his chin, "I don't know what that means."
The intercom crackled, "It means it's extremely rare. So rare it shouldn't exist. It's been proven in the small amount we obtained years ago that it is a cure-all for anything, including diseases with no cure. A few drops is all it takes. I - ah - worked in an institution that did experiments with gifted people, it's - no longer in operation. Perhaps you've heard of it. Arkos Institute ?"
I twitched uncomfortably. Fortunately no-one seemed to notice.
Mitch nodded, "Heard of 'em. Didn't know if it was some wise tale."
Divan was insistent, "No, it's not a myth. It's real - or - it was. As I worked closely with Arkos, mostly bringing him supplies, all I know is something - happened in his lab and someone shot him dead. But it was not with a standard gun. Some kind of heat beam. Very powerful. Melted the poor b*****d."
"Alien technology ?" Mitch asked.
Divan laughed, "Yeah, that's what the belief was. Best answer for now. I'll fill you in on more when you get in. Make SURE that boy and his Mother are asleep the whole time. I can't afford to have happen here what happened back at Arkos. Let's keep things neat and tidy, shall we ?"
Mitch nodded, "Yessir."
Divan changed the subject, "Is Clancy still there ?"
Clancy spoke, "I'm here, sir."
"No problems." Divan said. Not so much as a request as a command.
Clancy nodded, "There will be no problems, sir."
Divan finished up. "Good, then I'll see you by the end of the hour and we can deal with the agreement of payment for you four on delivered and intact goods."
The intercom turned to static then.
Both Clancy and Mitch moved forward to the front of the ambulance to talk amongst themselves, but I could not make out what they were saying.
But I had more important things to think about. Arkos Institute ! I thought they were gone, well, they are gone, but apparently this one doctor who worked closely with Arkos is familiar with kids and children and their "gifted" abilities.
Hell, if Tyr hadn't been such a showoff with her earlier telekinetic ability, me and my family might not even brushed shoulders with the awful Arkos group.
Despite the excitement I was tired. I stretched my legs slightly, not heard over the roar of the ambulance's auto engine and decided to get some sleep till we arrived.
. . .
Back in the desert the unusual winter wind whipped boldly around the hospital. All the employees did their best and had barricaded the windows so they would not break. Even then when a mighty bout came through, you could hear the glass bending if not breaking.
But now the freak storm was not concern. No, all eyes were on Tyr. Every indicator showed that she had been taken from a considerably cooler climate and did indeed develop desert fever from the sudden change to a hot climate. A freak miracle at that almost stranger than the weather change.
The fact the temperature was cold now did not add to her health. She was definitely running a fever of 104 and staff worked for hours to try and quell her sickness.
As she was delirious, over and over again she was calling, "Dev. Dev ! Dev, where are you ? Dev ! I need you !"
As Danielle was closest, she asked. "Who is that ? Is that someone she knows ?"
But then the general manager of the hospital arrived.
"Alright people, alright. Let's give her some breathing space. It's just common desert fever. You've seen it before. Let's give her some privacy." and with that he cleared out the room of everyone except one nurse.
As no-one else was there he whispered to her, "Write down everything she says. I'm not entirely convinced she's somehow not from the stars."
The nurse widened her eyes in amusement, "Seriously, doctor - "
But he interrupted her. "Check her vitals. Check anything you like. It doesn't make sense. She's not FROM here. In fact from the readings I would say she came from the opposite side of the planet. And as that's impossible, I'm sticking with my belief she's from the stars or she time traveled here or something."
The nurse pursed her lips in a leer, "That's quite an imagination, doctor."
He nodded agitated, "Just - just write down everything she says. Let me know when she regains consciousness. I have a great many questions for her when she does."
"I'll bet you do." she said.
He shrugged and left.
