REVERSING DEATH

Last week as you remember, a group of aliens visited and claimed to have ownership of the planet and offered to return the Robinson family and friends back to Earth.

But they cannot find the emissary they sent earlier. Without him, things could go very bad for the Robinsons as the aliens already suspect foul play.

So the family set out to see if they could find the emissary around the area of the Jupiter 2. Smith, as you know was directly responsible for the emissary's demise but "went along" with the search as well.

He had just finished telling his amazing "universe" ring that he wanted the emissary alive again and that he could find him, when the life meter he was given pointed out a new form of life off to his right.

Behind a few brambles and bushes he found -something- but clearly it was not the emissary they saw earlier.

Zachary looked at the horrid thing and shrieked.

Everyone immediately looked to Penny thinking she was in danger.

"It wasn't me." she said simply.

Don smiled, "Then that must be Smith. I recognize that schoolgirl yell anywhere. Come on. He must've found him."

The team easily track down Dr. Smith's shrieks and see. Well, it was hard to describe.

It was a rolling mass of electrified particles about 2-feet high. It tried to cling to one another but kept falling off. There was a weird kind of moaning coming from it as if "whatever" it was - it was in great pain.

John watched to see that wherever it passed, it was killing the grass, turning it black.

"Get back !" he said protectively. "That thing is acidic !"

Dr. Smith couldn't scramble in a retreat behind the group quickly enough. Stumbling over his feet he nearly did a backwards somersault to get away.

The Robinson family watched a little more. Sparks of white light were now emitting from it. The best way to describe it now was a molten melted glob of yellow-hot lava that oozed along the ground, burning everything in its path.

A strange head appeared and then a torso, then screamed pitifully as it seemed the acid burned over the face. There were more bright flashes of light, these blinding in intensity, a strange echoing pop - and then it vanished, as if it were somehow a cancer to normal reality and had to be "adjusted" back to a vacuum of existence.

Everyone was silent and speechless for several long moments.

Dr. Smith was the first to speak, and his voice was full of contempt. "Good riddance to bad rubbish."

Don wanted to say something. To ask Smith if he knew anything about it. But he knew the old codger would have an excuse for everything.

John was actually waiting for Don to whale into Smith. When it didn't happen, he let out a breath of ragged air. "Okay, I think this was what we're supposed to find - and obviously something, we don't know what, happened to it."

"It won't be coming back." Smith said with assurance.

That was all Don needed. He stepped forward challengingly, "Oh, and how would you know that, Smith ?"

Smith smiled evenly to him. "Because it's clear it didn't belong here. Not at all. It went back to - well, wherever it came from."

Don shook his head in frustration.

John spoke to everyone, "Well this won't go well for us. What do we tell those aliens when they come back ?"

Penny spoke up, "The truth. Always tell the truth."

Maurene patted Penny on her head. "That's a good girl. And yes, telling the truth is almost always the best solution to any problem. Almost. And in this case, I think we'd better decide if telling the truth is the best thing in this situation. Because, rare as it might be, telling the truth could do more harm than good."

The group retreated back to the Jupiter 2 to have a think. Dinnertime came and everyone was quiet and listless. All except for Smith who was clearly bubbling with enthusiasm.

"... and when we get back to Earth. I want each and every one of you to receive a medal. For uncommon bravery and survival in such a harsh wilderness as this. And for the excellent and meritorious conduct you have all shown on the mission."

"As for me. Once I get to visit a few of my favorite restaurants, return to my home, well, then all should be right with the world once again."

Don clattered his fork down noisily, "Smith ! Aren't you listening to a word anyone tells you !? We aren't going back to Earth ! Not unless we can find the emissary that was sent earlier. And, unfortunately, we did find him. But he didn't live very long."

"Remember what they said ? They'll be back in 2-days time, and if we or they cannot find the Emissary, it will go bad - VERY bad for all of us ! Now do you understand !?"

Smith lowered his eyes to his plate and rubbed his hands woefully, but didn't say anything.

Penny spoke. "I know we haven't brought it to a vote, but I think we should tell the truth. Tell them exactly what happened. Who knows ? Maybe what we saw was like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, just - in an alien way ?"

Will spoke in deference. "Aww, Penny. You don't know anything. I've read about stuff like this in sci-fi books. It was something that was brought back to life - and shouldn't have been."

Everyone looked up from their plates to look at Will with immediate surprise. Mostly because it really did answer what they just saw.

Smith was beside himself with fear for the clever boy finding out exactly what happened. He nervously added, "My dear boy, I don't think you have any idea of what you are talking about."

Don smiled and added, "No. I think Will's right. It was something that was killed. We all saw that first. And then - something tried to bring it back to life, with horrific results."

Smith's cleverness was lost in a sea of worry. "Surely you don't think I'm responsible, do you ?"

Don grinned wickedly, "You were the first one to find it."

John held a hand up to intervene. "That's enough. Putting blame on someone this late in the game won't help anyone. What we need to do is - figure out the best way to handle this."

Judy who had been listening intently all this time finally spoke, "How about if we don't wait for them to come back, but we go to see them ? Won't that seem to be a gesture of trust ?"

John nodded, "I like that idea, Judy. That's a good one. Okay, we get a good night's sleep tonight, but TOMORROW we go and find them. And - I think Penny is right, tell them precisely what happened, don't leave out anything."

He clasped his hands under his chin thoughtfully. "If we are somehow guilty of this, I want them to know we have nothing to hide."

There were some murmurs of agreement and everyone finished their dinner. It was late. They headed to their respective rooms. Smith was the last to go, offering to clean up afterwards - strange as he always avoided any degree of work no matter how small.

"Guilty conscience, Smith ?" Don retorted, leaving the table to Smith.

"Oh, like you have never been guilty of anything, major !" Smith shot back. Don was too tired to argue and went to his quarters. In a short time, Smith was the only one still active.

He wanted to clean the dishes because sleep was positively the last thing on his mind ...
