CHAPTER 10 - "The Truth Will Hurt You"
* * *
This chapter is Rated: TEEN
We, meaning Dollface and myself had managed to dodge down another corridor when suddenly someone grabbed me !
I tried to use the taser rifle on them but I was at too close a range to rotate it behind me. It was wrestled from my grip and thrown to the floor. Both my hands were whirled behind me and clicked into a handcuff.
I was captured ! And in less time than I thought it would take. I mean, well, maybe I had a chance of escaping - but I guess that was too much to hope for.
Tears came to my eyes. I was certain to be punished severely for this.
But no. This big muscular guard thrust me against the wall. Then turned around to face me.
"Don't move, understand !?" he demanded in a gravelly voice.
I nodded. I wasn't going to going to be going anywhere - not with these heavy metal cuffs on my wrists from behind me.
He stepped forward and picked up Dollface who was dodging left and right trying hard not to get stepped on. He chuckled and wrapped her up in a washcloth and tied it down with a thick rubberband.
Then he stepped back and I knew the next person I saw would be someone important.
And it was, it was the mad doctor. I really cried now, fearing he would amputate my limbs as he promised. But no, he walked right by me as if I didn't exist and instead went to Dollface all bundled up in the hand towel.
"You !" he said menacingly. "I can understand him, he's new here. But you. You know better. You know FAR better !"
"You can't hurt me !" she said in a strikingly angry voice.
He is quiet for a moment, then chuckles, "No, perhaps not. You are, after all, immortal in this form." He picked up the towel she was in and held it in one fist. "Even if I were to crush the life out of you, you would merely choose a new doll to occupy."
He gives the bundle back to the guard. "But don't ever think I can't hurt you. Don't ever believe that ! I know the friendship you have with David here, and I can end it."
Suddenly Dollface shrieked, "No ! You promised ! You said you would never do that again !"
He whirls on her in a fury, "But who is it that is breaking the rules now, Doll ? Me ? No, it's you. You're the one who promised ME that YOU would never do this again. Try to help one of our clients escape the facility."
He clicks his tongue disconsolately. "You simply leave me no choice."
Then he comes to me. "David, you would like to see the truth of Dollface, wouldn't you ?"
He waits for an answer. And I give him one. "No. I think some secrets are better left kept unspoken. If this 'truth' you speak of will hurt Dollface, then it is no truth that I need to know of. I can be friends with her just as she is. Her secrets are her own - and if and when she wants to tell me this 'truth' I will listen, but only from her - and not YOU."
The doctor squints his eyes at me, clearly furious at my answer. "Think you're so clever." he sneers. Then snapping his fingers says, "Bring him !"
I am dragged to another part of the facility, where, I'm not sure. We approach an area where I see a bunch of bedridden children. They all look a little strange in some way. Finally we stop at one door.
On the front of it a name tag, "Dorothy Fandes."
Suddenly I feel the handcuffs released from me.
"Go ahead." the doctor urges and pushes me forward to the door.
I look to Dollface still bound in the washcloth, but she seems to have fallen asleep or something.
"You haven't hurt her !?" I demand.
The doctor shakes his head, "No. She has merely left the doll. Go on."
"In - here ?" I ask and point to the door.
He nods quietly and has a look of victory on his face.
I could run away at this point, I might even get down the hall, but without Dollface to show me where the exit was, I would likely would just get captured again and THEN I would be in trouble - more so than I was already.
"Okay." I sigh, and push open the door.
Inside there are red lights and a mechanical breathing sound. It doesn't take me long to realize that whoever is in this hospital room is in critical condition and just barely hanging on.
A full panel of medical circuit boards are pushed all near the bed, and - in the bed is.
Well, at first I thought it was a wet pink towel that was strangely bundled, but no - it was a person, and apparently one that had some serious birth defects.
Now that my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I could see this person was immensely fat, the face had weird fat bumps on one side, and extreme acne covered one whole side of the face with blisters and boils threatened to burst if touched.
One whole side appeared to be almost elephantine in nature, this made especially apparent by the clefted bare foot and oversized malformed hands. The head was like a basketball that had half the air out of it, and drooped to one side in a wet and nasty looking bandage.
But more important than all this, I could see she - and yes it was a girl. And she was crying.
"Dollface." I said suddenly realizing what was going on here.
* * *
"You see why I couldn't go with you." she spoke in a guttural whisper.
She
relates her story, "It was a long time ago. I had, as you can see, a
very rough birth. My Mother was not only taking street drugs but sniffed paint, snorted cocaine, and shot herself up with speed and amphetamines.
"She was a real dope fiend, and as you can see, it dramatically affected my arrival into this world. I almost didn't make it."
"But when I reached 8-years old, something stirred within me when I slept. I had this ability to enter any doll and bring it to life. More importantly, I BECAME that doll."
She cried a little more, "I am so sorry you had to see me like this. I - I am ASHAMED of the way I look and even now you must truly hate me for the monster I am and to keep this terrible and horrible secret from you."
Now it was my turn to get teary-eyed. "No. I don't hate you. Not in the least. You didn't choose to be who you are. That was not your fault. That is not your weight to carry, but your Mother's for her drug addiction."
"I think it is wonderful that you can enter the life of a doll and live out your days in infinite beauty and cuteness - but at the same token, I think you, just as you are, are a beautiful and wonderful person."
I turned my head to look slightly over my shoulder. "The only monster I see here is the doctor, hoping by me seeing you as you truly are that it would break out special friendship. And in fact, it has only strengthened it. You are a wonderful person and deserve the best life has to offer."
"That's enough !" the doctor shrieked who was just behind us.
"Are you not blind !? Can you not see what a horrible, ugly, and monstrous person that she is ? Why - she should be locked up in a zoo ! She should be put in a freak show !" and then he laughed cruelly.
I couldn't stand him anymore. I leaned back and whaled a big punch into him. He doubled over in pain, and then I started running - running - running ! Running faster and further than I ever had before.
It felt like my feet weren't even touching the ground. But I still didn't know where I was. Despite darting randomly left and right down halls, I felt more and more I was getting deeper towards the center of this institute for gifted children.
And then I ran to hide in one large room. I suspected I could duck behind a table or something, but no, there was nothing in this room ! D****t ! No boxes, nothing ! There was nowhere to hide - and then the lights snapped on.
"I'm so very disappointed in you." It was the evil doctor again, his voice echoing in this perfectly large but empty room.
He pointed an accusatory finger at me, "You won't ever be seeing Dollface - not ever again, I'll see to that !"
Then he laughed, "It looks like we'll be cutting you up for parts after all. No doubt your duplicating ability will still be kept intact through it all."
He looked to the ceiling, "Why, I'll even put you in a room next to Dollface, minus your limbs of course. But you'll still never be able to see or hear from her again, or her of you. Despite being right next door to each other." And he laughed at the wickedness of it.
"That is enough !" I yelled.
"Take him !" the doctor said and two muscular security guards started to approach. One had a hypodermic needle ready and the other was wrapping a belt around his wrist.
I panicked. Maybe I did the right thing, maybe it was wrong. But I was going to end this.
Now.
"You're mine !" I said and with my hands free, reached out the index finger from my right hand and touched my left shoulder.
There was a weird screaming sound, bright light, and blinding colorful sparkles. The wind whipped around me like in a tornado, but only for a moment. When it finished, there were two of me. One standing next to the other.
I looked to the duplicate, and he looked at me, and we smiled. We were exact copies of each other. And we both knew what next we had to do next.
"Take them both !" the doctor shrieked in frustration.
The guards each started after us but then I did what I knew would end this, and likely end everything else for that matter.
"You're mine !" we both said together and then he tapped his right index finger to my left.
We were duplicating a duplicate. And that is where things got really weird. The walls of the room suddenly superheated and melted away in a fiery furnace of white-hot heat.
My duplicate and me - our chests burst open in a rainbow of colors darkened by these strange little black bat-like beings. Types of demons. Almost as if they knew what to do, they launched out to bite and scratch at the doctor.
"No, get away from me ! Get away !"
When in one moment there was only a dozen of these winged demons, now there were hundreds, pouring out of my duplicates and mine chest. Darkness surrounded the whole room followed by the flapping of hundreds of bat-like wings and the chewing sound as they started to devour the flesh beneath the torn clothing of the wicked doctor.
Then I woke up finally, in a cold sweat. Dream ended.
