I wasn't expecting Mom at all and why didn't I hear her climbing up the steps !? Did she secretly creep up them ?
At once I tried to move away from Tyr but her lips were stick to mine ! We tried to pull away again but the devilish lip-gloss she had on was like glue !
"Oww !" Tyr cried in pain as I tried to pull away again.
Finally, I dabbed my own fingers in my glass of soda nearby and rubbed them vigorously over our lips to get them separated.
I immediately looked down at the floor and found it very hard to breathe right then, mostly because of the red-hot glare my Mom was giving me.
Mom continued to watch and while I hoped she might've been amused at what she saw, clearly she wasn't.
"I'm waiting for an explanation, young man." she said patiently, reminding me that she was witness to the whole embarrassing thing.
I spoke nervously licking my lips as it felt like some skin was missing from them now since we had gotten separated. "Nothing Mom, I - Tyr had some chewing gum caught in her braces and I was trying to get it out."
She stood in the doorway, crossed her arms and tapped her fingers near her elbows.
Finally she shook her head, surprised I would be even remotely deceptive about something like this, "That's a new one, Dev. Tyr doesn't have braces. Can't you just say you were sharing a kiss together ?"
I looked at her shocked and she continued in my dumbfounded silence, "You two have known each other for quite a-while now. What less can I expect out of you, today ?"
She smiled softly at me for a second, just for a moment, then stepping backwards with almost a bow, left and closed the door behind her quietly so we could have our privacy again.
We waited until we heard her descend the stairs to return to the kitchen. Then Tyr stood up to face me, and she looked as shocked as I was by what she said, "Omigod, you have like the most understanding Mom in the holy world !"
"Seems like." I said going back to the computer, really NOT wanting my Mom to have seen that moment.
Fortunately, the computer was ready for use now and I shook my head, dismissing earlier and focused back on the system. I fished the plugin out from under the bed and inserted it back in the computer.
It glowed with it's telltale unearthly blue and then I retrieved a sub-directory on it.
DATA2MAT.EXE
MAT2DATA.EXE
"This is the one we want." I told Tyr. She nodded.
I typed out "data2mat.exe" and waited. Several moments passed in silence, finally a screen popped up and said:
SIM REQUIRED TO COMPLETE TRANSACTION.
"Whatza SIM ?" Tyr asked pushing up her glasses on her nose as they had fallen down in our moment of 'passion.'
"I'm not sure, Tyr." I replied, equally puzzled, "I haven't tried out all these programs yet. In a way, I'm a little frightened, especially with what we've done so far."
I was back at the command prompt so I typed out "sim" then ENTER key and waited.
SIM V384.279 ACTIVE
WHO ARE YOU ?
:_
Not only did we see the text but heard it on the speakers as well !
Very deep, baritone, and definitely digital. I toned down my speakers in case Mom came back in to see what we were doing here and while she kinna got me caught with my pants down earlier, I certainly didn't want her to see this alien technology on top of everything else.
THAT might be difficult if not impossible to explain.
I looked at Tyr for a second. She shrugged. I nodded and then typed carefully typed out, "Dev." followed by the ENTER key.
NICE NAME, DEV.
WHO IS THAT NEXT TO YOU ?
:_
I shook my head and smiled. I knew Tyr was thinking the computer was sentient but clever programming could make it do this. I could write something this simple if I wanted to.
"I don't think it's alive, Tyr." I told her, hopefully answering her question. "No, I think it's just A.I., Artificial Intelligence - software or something. Pretty harmless, but cute, whoever wrote it."
Then without waiting for a prompt from me, she reached over me with her jingly charm bracelets clattering against the spacebar key and typed out with her delicate pink fingers, "Tyr"
Nothing happened. I smiled and pressed the ENTER key. Then the screen changed again.
WELCOME BACK, TYR.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ?
:_
Tyr leapt back as if stung by a bee, "What ?? I don't knowing this thing ! What it is saying it says to me welcome back ? Welcome back to me what now is whats I want to know, huh ?"
I laughed a little. Clearly there was a glitch in the programming - and yet ... ? Maybe it was something else. Something I should investigate - but later.
She came back to the screen and it had changed apparently not waiting for an answer, we both read and heard out loud.
WHO IS THAT NEXT TO YOU ?
:_
We had already identified ourselves. We turned around both half-expecting to see Mom in the doorway again, but there was no-one there.
I squinted my eyes for a second, a little confused at the program we were running and typed out: "No-one." and ENTER.
READY TO BEGIN, DEV AND TYR.
The screen paused for a second as we read this and then it went black. The USB was still glowing it's blue color, however, so it was still active.
After a minute of silence Tyr popped her tongue over her teeth making a funny clicking sound and finally said impatiently, "C'mon Dev. Do something already !"
I nodded and typed out, "hello." and ENTER.
The system replied back:
HELLO.
Tyr laughed, "Friendly ain't it ?"
I nodded and, determined to find the limits of it's vocabulary typed out, "Are you there ?"
YES. I AM HERE, DEV AND TYR.
Apparently it was well-written software, in any case, if a little too personal I thought.
"What are you ready for ?" I typed out, determined to reach the limits of it's 'intelligence.'
WHAT DO YOU WANT ?
