I guess I need to make a tutorial on how to apply these to your profile images. It's not just a few keystrokes but a bit more, so I'll write that up tomorrow.

Mark, I'm so familiar with how to find things on the Internet now that I make a habit of knowing where to look for everything I need, and even then I learn the strengths and weaknesses of the systems I work in or portray the final results.
For instance, Writer's Cafe is an unusual blogging system and will allow you to upload any number of images, ad infinitum. And they don't care what kind either. The only limitation is the images cannot be bigger than 500 pixels across or down.
So, I wrote a script to take the sources of my much larger wallpapers which I archived earlier that are approximately 2000 pixels across and to shrink them down to 470 pixels across.
As you know or should, if you ever plan to re-size an image, and this includes videos, you should always work with the BEST possible source you can (for video, decompressed DVD VOBs is pretty good), and usually this entails that it be considerably larger than what you are shrinking it to.
Under no circumstances should you ever try to enlarge a smaller image or video. I mean you can use a Lanczos or Triangular Eagle-x2 filter, but most of the time it is just not worth it unless that is the only source that exists on the planet, and sometimes it is.
So just keep sources of images MUCH larger than you ever plan to use so when you re-size them later, they are of maximum quality every time.
From the resized 470-pixel across image, then I run my script which adds a neat 28 distance shadow and border to it while giving it a slight beveled inner edge and rounded corners. Then I do a contrast, enhance, brightness, clarify, smart sharpen, and Fill-Light effect, about 6% for that usually to separate the colors the eye can't see up a notch.
Why save an image with data the human eye can't see ? You want all of it in there. :)
Then I save that off as a decompressed .PNG image. A .PNG as you should know is a lossless image format, that is why there are no JPEG artefacts in any of my posts in here as they are all saved at 24-bit decompressed .PNGs, and I also run a contrast/enhance/brightness/clarify .
It is only when I need an image larger than 500 pixels across do I rely on a separate image server, and - unfortunately I do have to watch my total usage so generally I save them as very high-quality JPGs. Even though it's lossless I check pixel-per-pixel to make sure the common human eye can't detected a difference, generally 10% compression is good enough, sometimes I have to go 9%.
