CHAPTER 21 - ULTERIOR MOTIVES

Things
were moving quickly now. It was already afternoon the next day.
Apparently I was dead to the world from the pill the Dr gave me the
night before as they wordlessly moved me from one hospital bedroom to
another. And this one was a single, I had it all to myself.
Word of my 'accident' had spread throughout all of where I worked. Mr.
Sunders, my boss, even called to check up on me. I thought at first he'd
be angry, but no, he was apologetic.
But the expression he gave me on the phone was odd and unfamiliar to me.
It was like HE KNEW what really happened to me, that I didn't in fact
fall down the stairs, but that I was used as a battering ram against the
women's restroom door off-hours, but he didn't want to talk about it
and just wanted to make sure I was okay.
"What about my job ?" I asked him.
I heard the familiar crunch as he chomped down on that cigar. Lor' I was
beginning to believe he even slept with it like I did with Susan.
"Yer job, BOY !? What about it !?" he said with his teeth clenched on
that nicotine rod. Oboy, I knew it. It was my last day there after all.
But then in my silence his voice softened, "Yeah, yer job, boy. Tricia mentioned
something about that. Now look here, son. She's gonna be coming by for yer to sign some papers. I wanchu to take a REAL good look at 'im."
He paused to let that sink in then added in a confidential tone,
"Depending on how you sign THAT depends upon whether err not you git to
keep chur job in herr, unnerstand ?"
"Yessir." I said dutifully.
I heard a squeak in his chair as he obviously leaned hard back into it,
and it complained against his bulk. He was pleased with himself, I
could hear that much in him, "Thattaboy !" he said encouragingly, "Yer just leave everything to us and we's gonna take real good care of you, hear ?"
And then before I could say anything further he clicked the line closed.
I set down the receiver. I thought for a moment. I was feeling better
in truth. My head was healing. I think all the surgery was done for now.
But what possible kind of paperwork could there be for me to sign ? I
mean - don't you only sign paperwork if it's your fault and not the
other way around ?
I didn't have long to wait. Tricia had arrived and if I thought she
dressed sexy before at work I was certainly mistaken now. She was drop
dead gorgeous in a skirt I knew they couldn't possibly let her get away
with at work, and I realized quite suddenly, it was all for my benefit
as she wiggled her way towards me with a wide grin on her face.
"Wow." I said appreciatively watching her sway.
She hummed pleasantly and greeted me with a disarming smile, apparently
expecting a positive reaction in her wardrobe change and then asked me
to sit up in bed and look at what she had for me.
"Now David," she began, "I went over your papers here. Because of, ahhm,
lack of evidence, showing we were responsible for - the incident, I had
to make a few changes to it."
She paused and then added, "I spent most of the morning working on these, and I want you to look them over."
She then put the sheaf of papers in my lap and I read. The first thing I
saw was the amount for, "$1,200,000.00" in damages. I put my fingers
down on the page to point at the zeroes and started counting cause I was
never good with big numbers.
I spoke quietly to myself as I moved across the digits, "Thousand, ten
thousand, hundred thousand, one million. Wait - ONE MILLION !?"
I got upset at once ! "Tricia, ahhm ... I can't afford this ! I thought this was gonna go in =MY= favor ? I mean - I'm the one that got hurt - right ? And now 'm gonna go to jail cause I can't pay all this, right !?"
Tricia pulled up a chair and sat down. The smile never left her pretty
face. But she did get stern with me, "Why don't you read the WHOLE thing
now, David ? Hmm ? I'll help you with it if you like, okay ?"
I was never very good with understanding legal documents so she leaned over my bed and pointed out a few things.
The first thing she did was say that BBI owed =ME= 1.2 million dollars. I
fell back in my pillow but Nancy's head followed mine all the way back
to give me a wide smile.
"Whatcha gonna do with all that money, slugger ?" she asked with a greedy grin.
I was totally shocked. I HATED money, I always have, I always will. It never wound up amounting to anything good.
"I don't want it !" I said angrily.
Tricia caught herself from laughing out loud, "Wha ? What did you say ?"
and then she was coughing suddenly to cover up her derision which
couldn't be stifled now.
"I - don't - want - it !" I said very carefully watching her expression change from amusement to clear confusion.
Tricia cocked her head quizzically and the smile returned, "You mean,
you don't know what to do with it." she said assertively trying to find
sanity in what I said.
"Well, yeah, that !" I said and scraped my lap knocking the papers on the floor. I didn't want anything to do with them.
Tricia's sweet hum returned and I noticed that she turned completely
around with her back to me, her calves up against my bed frame, picking
the papers off the floor making sure to bend at the waist to give me an
eyeful of what she had to offer.
* * *
Sweat beaded hard on my forehead and I felt my eyes were going to pop
out of my head I was looking so hard at her right now, mere inches from
me. She hummed contentedly and she stayed that way for a moment.
Then she whirled around suddenly facing me with a leer on her face and I
twisted my head away, hard, as if I was looking at a bird or SOMETHING
outside in the window, anything, I didn't want her to know I was looking
at ... ! My head hurt because I was still recovering from the
concussion.
She trilled a little hum and smoothed down her skirt a fraction as I
continued to look out the window trying to think about baseball,
baseball, baseball ... !
But then she was onto something else, "Well, don't you worry your pretty
little head about those papers right now." and she set them down on a
rolling table near the bed.
"In any case, I have something for you to make you feel better. A GIFT !"
"Oh ?" I said, suddenly interested again.
"Yep !" she said and reached around to hand me a big prettily wrapped
box and set it on my lap. "And it is - just - for - YOU !" she said
emphasizing the last word.
There was a sealed envelope on the top of it.
"Don't I need to wait till my Birthday ?" I offered in a meek voice.
"Oh, David !" she said getting a little cross herself, "For God's sake, open it up ! Don't be such a baby !"
"Baby !?" I growled.
"Yeah," She said evenly narrowing her eyes at me and saying the last word slow and with great deliberation, "Baby."
I gave her a fierce look and she returned it by sticking her pretty face up against mine with a wide silly pouty face.
I didn't know how to react to this. Finally she laughed out loud, "You
poor thing." although her mouth was clearly in a victorious leer from
the pained expression on my face of her earlier behavior.
"I'm notta baby." I added quietly, scowling, a little hurt at the
statement she made as I worked with the wrapping.
"Sure you aren't, dear." she said in a tone clearly reserved for children.
I did notice the wrapping was predominantly pink with glitter and pretty at that, however.
Clearly, she did not wrap this herself but went to some fancy store to
get it all bundled up like this, but I didn't say anything about it, and
it certainly was wrapped well.
As I worked on the wrapping she bit her lip for a moment as if deciding
something stood up to face her back to me like she was either
embarrassed or ashamed of what she was going to say next.
My eyes couldn't be help but be drawn again to the seductively short
skirt she was wearing and the tip of white peeking from the edge. And
from my position in bed, I was certainly getting a great view of it.
"David," she said in a strange thoughtful voice that brought me back to
the present, "Just what are you going to do with all that money ?"
I didn't answer but kept working on the wrapping, my eyes transfixed on
the edge of her panties. Somebody must've used a whole roll of
Scotch-Tape on my package I was muttering to myself as I continued to
stare at the tantalizing peek-a-boo white cotton showing.
"David ... ?" she said continuing to have her back face me but turned her head to look over her shoulder for a reply.
I turned my eyes back to the package suddenly and answered
uninterestedly, "Oh ? The money, uhhm, I dunno, give it to charity or
something."
"All of it !?" she sounded shocked and in disbelief of what I said.
"Well, yeah ... I mean NO ! Not all of it. I mean it's a lot or
something, right ? Well, maybe lotsa charities - or something." I whined
irritably, "I dunno, gimme a sec will ya ?"
Then she turned so she was facing me sideways but faced her head forward
like she was talking to a ghost at the front door. I realized she had
an awesome figure and apparently she wasn't even looking to see where my
eyes were at the moment so I raised up a bit in my pillow to look at
her perfect and shapely legs from behind.
Then her voice came again and it had that odd tinge of, I couldn't really describe it ... desire ?
"So, you really DON'T know what you're going to do with all of that money."
"Guess not !" I agreed easily. I needed to look at the package now to
get the rest of it and I finally got the paper off and was fingering the
top to get the tape off it. It was clearly a cardboard box with no
writing anywheres around it. Such a secret ! I had to find out what it
was !
But first I was going to sneak a peek at her figure again.
"I see." she said evenly and then turned to face me. At once I jerked my
head up to look at her face, but not quickly enough as it was clear to
her where my gaze was right then.
But if she realized this, if anything, she seemed PLEASED at that and
gave me a lecherous smile, as if, that was her original idea. I
swallowed hard. Girls - ALWAYS - as long as I live, I told myself, will
always scare me.
You never know what's going on in their scheming
conniving little brains ! I scowled to myself. They never do anything unless there is a solid reason for it. I learned that the hard way years ago.
* * *
I popped open the box finally and inside was a GAMEBOY ! Well, this was
back many years ago so it was the early B&W version but I was SO
excited ! I was saving up to get one of these and MAN they were
expensive !
"Waaaow !" I said and to my horror saw two drops of drool spill out of my mouth in my excitement.
"Good, huh ?" Tricia said ignoring my obvious astonishment. "Look inside !" she said eagerly.
I looked further inside the gift she handed me and there were 4 smaller
boxes within, GAMES for the Gameboy ! Great stuff ! The system had just
come out ! I was so excited, I set them beside each other so I could
look at them in my lap:
"AWESOME !" I marveled. Great Greed was one of the absolute BEST RPGs for
Gameboy outside of Squaresoft's amazing Final Fantasy lineup. Then I suddenly
reached out sideways, as well as I could, and hugged her around her
waist as I read the back of one of the games
"Thank you so much !"
She looked at me for a moment and reached down to her waist and took my
hands down a notch so I was hugging her butt and she looked down at me
with her pretty crystalline eyes humming nicely.
"You're welcome, sweetie." she said and gave me a fiercely seductive look batting her eyes shamefully at me.
"Oh." I said suddenly and pulled my hands back. There was a moment of
uncomfortable silence, then I returned to opening the battery-pack so I
could try out the Gameboy.
"It's alright David. You didn't do anything wrong." she said nicely with
a smile on her face and tried to look bashful, which for her was
perfectly impossible.
I didn't answer, I didn't want to answer that. But I started to pull
open the rest of the packaging. I definitely wanted to try out one of
the games rather than - whatever - it was I was - she was - we were -
doing earlier.
Then she leaned down on her knees to meet me at face level, her skirt
squeaking angrily and threatening to rip in the process, "Haven't you
ever been with another girl before, David ?" she asked me quietly with
her eyes full of wonder.
I didn't say anything.
"Don't you think I'm pretty ?" she said and her voice had a hint of sadness to it.
"MMm mmm ..." I said not giving her a yes or a no. That was a
touchy-touchy subject with me, especially what happened earlier and my
heart was racing enough for the fact that I touched her ... if even
accidentally.
"I see." she said again. Then she raised back up and grabbed the hem of
her skirt to pull it back down again as in squatting the thing doubled
over like a thin belt. But my eyes were on the box and getting it open.
"Hmm ..." she said thoughtfully seeing I was clearly more interested in the present than her appearance.
"Oh !" she added, "You didn't read your card !"
I was just about to put the included batteries in the Gameboy, but I knew I should look at the card first.
"Aww man, ahhm, Yeah, well, okay." I said not very interested. Darnit ! I wanted to try out this thing already !
She found the envelope on the floor where I had dumped it and whisked
her hand across the top of it, blowing on it, making a real scene that I
should take better care of it, and then finally handed it to me.
I looked at it for a moment. She said, "Just a sec." and reached into
her purse to pull out a nail file. I quickly opened the envelope
carefully with that and gave her back her nail file.
"David," she said as I was fingering out the card, "You DO know I'm very fond of you, don't you ?"
"Ah hum." I said not really thinking about it.
"Oh !" I said looking at the card. It was a cute Japanese-Anime card.
MAN ! Where did she get it ? I couldn't think of any stores around here
that would carry such a nice one like this.
It showed two cute anime figures, lots of glitter, a boy and a girl
sitting facing away from the camera to look at the stars in the
distance.
The artwork was dazzlingly cute. The boy was in little blue shorts and
the girl was in an adorable and ruffled pink skirt as they sat on the hill to look at the sky. They were holding
hands.
Wow ! You could NEVER buy something this adorable from a regular card shop !
I saw that she had taken a glittery marker and wrote 'David' on the boy
and 'Tricia' on the girl. And she had stuck an additional glittery
purple heart in the sky as if that was what they were looking at.
"Hmmm ..." I grumbled. I was getting a little aggravated at the none-too
subtle message she was giving me. Didn't she know that I was with Rose ? Clearly this was all leading up to something ...
