date night

date night

A Poem by dukovan

You gave me too many options
I wasn't all that hungry to begin with
the hardest part about eating,
is always the small talk
so I break into characters

We shuffled our seats a little
gave the waiter more attention than each other
I saw a short man with a tall woman
I thought he could use a phone book
she could fit one in her phone

My beverage is much shorter than yours
I can't seem to get comfortable
You won't let me get away with it
you seem to think it's your fault
I break out of my shell

"Do you think people should be getting together like this?"

You look impressed

"Well, I mean its just a strange ritual, I take you here, they make us food, and I show you I can pay for it."

You say we should finish our drinks and leave.

"Without paying?"

You say your cousin owns the place, and that he's been watching us.

"He'll break your legs"

I suggest we take the breadsticks too.

Wildly imaginative, which is the best kind of writing. There isn't a single thought here that even comes close to being predictable! I've never gone on a date like this in my life, yet I can totally catch the vibe you're conveying about how these things go. My favorite line: "and I show you I can pay for it" -- the entire line is so freakin' honest, it blows our socks off, but this last phrase really surprised me becuz I never thought that thought, but now that you've said it, I see how it fits perfectly into this ridiculous ritual. This is delightful satire at a level few attain (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
