Back home from schoolA Story by dukovanI'm standing outside of class during a break with one other classmate. We've never spoken and are having a cigarette. He breaks the silence first,"do you feel that?" He's hold his hand out palm facing up. I nodded, "rain drop?" He nodded. I see a guy walking towards us on the sidewalk. He has his umbrella out and over his head. As he gets nearer the rain starts to pour. The man closes his umbrella and keeps walking. "Did you see that?" My classmate nods. I'm back at my parents house for the weekend from school. I'm awake before everyone else and getting coffee as soon as the cafe opens. I used to work here, but don't recognize one of the baristas and can't remember the others name. We make the transaction with as few words as possible. I'm walking past the strip mall attached to the cafe, hoping some words will find me. I'm betting that my coffee wont get cold before they do. I take a sip and burn my tongue. "God damn it", I spit, and give thanks to him for the words. There's a rush of excitement moments before it begins to rain. Now its raining even harder than I bother to keep up with. I'm watching the raindrops hit the empty parking lot. The shape of a girl starts to form. I'm thinking she must have left her car here last night. She pulls her hood off and I recognize her but can't remember her name. It's been six years since I've been out of high school. Now the rain stops and she disappears. I'm smiling with a lump in my throat. I take a sip of coffee and its the perfect temperature. I laugh and clear my throat. I put up my hood and walked back to my car. © 2016 dukovan |
