the difference in this house

the difference in this house

A Poem by dukovan

I meant it when I said I would never lie to you
But the only thing you could believe was anything but the truth

I said that it's useful to mean what you say
There's hardly a difference either way

Back down the staircase
A fire in the kitchen
Your furniture on the lawn

Tracing bodies
Barely breathing
Making shadows in the sun

And one by one the people walked into my yard
I had my health and memories
And a pack of cigarettes

Here's this house on this hill
And you never looked down
At the holy people
And the space that they fill

So you smile in mirrors
Standing on your head
You swore you saw the difference
But took the ladder instead.

And so that's been the difference in the house that we built
So we made the difference and the space we will fill.
