Spirit of the trail

Spirit of the trail

A Story by dukovan

So me and this buddy of mine from back in high school, we started on this little trip across town into these old Indian reservation ltrails. There were supposed to be all sorts of funny little spirits that hung out for the longest time. Ever since they died i suppose.
So anyways we were walking along this old bike path n our way and we saw a deer standing a ways up ahead. My friend looked at me and said hey do you think its a spirit? I said "no way man its not time to see the spirits yet".
He looked at me and said "Oh ok"
Now to be honest I couldn't have told you if that was a spirit or not, but i had been living up there for a while and I had seen plently of deer, and there was nothing about them that I could've pointed out that would have made me believe it was a spirit, seeing as I'm always seeing deer. I figured I'd tell my buddy it was a spirit as soon as I saw something that was new to me, seeing as I've never seen one yet. I told him I would point out anything spirit like when I saw it. He nodded and we kept walking. I started humming a little tune to my foot steps followed by the placement of a little chant of words kept up with my pace.

"Spirit in the sky don't you die on me;
don't die"

A feeling started building up in my chest, the trees seemed to be rustling internally and swaying as a whole, on different intervals that matched the music of my mind and body. So, naturally, I kept the tune up.

"Spirit in the sky don't you die on me:
don't die"

Then the next lyrics poured out even more naturally, in fact,  so naturally I could hardly tell it was even me who sang them.

"Wasting all your life, wasting all your time trying to fly,
like me."

So I challenged it
"Don't you ever settle on the score?
Don't you know anymore?"

And again the next lyric that came on out of my mouth was even more removed from what I would have expected..
I felt as though I was getting caught up in somtehing.

"Wasting all your time
waste it on waiting for more"

So at this point I started to get really freaked out you know?
my feet started doing there own thing in relation to my legs,
in relation to my torso all the way up the top of my head, where the joke was just flying over me
before I realized how goofy I was walking.
"Hey are you alright dude? You look possessed? Are you just trying to freak me out?"
I shurgged it off and we kept walking

Just as we approached the bridge over the Embarrass river I noticed a fox making his way across at the end of it. We stopped and he conjured the air around him in contrast to the pierce of color and the way his tail made brush strokes through the air.
We knew we were both thinking the same thing,
"Do you think this is a spirit man?"
I didn't know how to reply, I mean with the deer I had seen plenty of them, but I'd never seen too many foxes, actually maybe only once or twice. So I gave an honest answer.
"I don't really know, maybe."

"Spirit in the sky don't you die on me;
don't die."

"Wasting all your time,
wasting all your life trying to fly
like me."

"Don't you ever settle all the scores anymore?"

"no more"

"I've been wasting all my time,
wasting all my life trying to fly,
its not like me"
