Mother To Be

Mother To Be

A Poem by Ryan Halterman

The earth has almost turned toward the moon for the coming night,
High above the stars prepare themselves for their nightly dance across the sky,
Below them the sun has almost set over a green field in Missouri,
Lighting up the sky all shades or orange like god's final pastel painting of the day,
Barely lighting this field but enough remains to see the wonder that it holds,
Tall trees off in the distance have become silhouettes along the horizon
Green grass sways gently under the caress of the evening breeze,
But in that grass beneath the coming stars, moon, the setting sun and orange sky,
Lies the rarest beauty of all,
A woman with brown hair falling over her shoulder and arms supporting her as the rest of her body stretches out upon the grass,
Exposed long legs with pale white soft silken skinned legs stretch out from her torso down to her feet covered in black shoes,
And in this rare beauty's belly grows something rarer still than a beautiful woman lying in a field alone at sunset,
New life brought one day closer to birth with the setting sun,
Carried tonight safely in this breathtaking woman's womb,
And as darkness falls and this scene can no longer be seen with the human eye,
I hope to find that child years down the road and tell it of the beauty I saw,
In the time before their birth when this mother, the field, the sky, the sun, the moon, and the stars,
All held still just long enough for me to understand the beauty before me,
Life in all its stages frozen for just one moment in time,
But long enough to live forever in my memory
