The Secret

The Secret

A Poem by Ryan Halterman

Leon Redbone blasts through the speakers as I drive at 120 down the desert highway,
Laid back relaxed.
The whole world....every moment since the big bang
Exists only in the rear view mirror,
Ahead lies the unknown and I am barreling toward it full speed,
125
135
140....the needle bounces on the end of the speedometer,
But the car holds steady,
The world begins to blur,
Only fragments or reality register in my mind,
I am moving much to fast to take in the whole scene,
The wind is ferocious,
Trying to push me in one direction or the other,
After all  the universe hates straight lines,
Everything curves and bends or turns or slumps,
Nothing moves in a straight line..not even me....not this car
If i go too far to one side or the other I'll be killed,
But....
If I can keep the steering wheel straight I'll have balance,
I wont be crashing today.... Everything is under control
I just have to keep it that way...
There is no room for fear on this drive.
I'm going to the ocean....
I want to stop just as the waves reach the tires
I'm going to passionately kiss the first beautiful woman I see,
I'm going to get drunk,
I'm going to jump...I've been sitting too long.
I'm going to watch reality reveal its beauty to me again,
I going to let it remind me what it feels to be alive,
Wild and Free
I will lose myself in every moment and drift with the wind....
I was gone before I left
And I'll still be gone when I get back,
And I will look the same when people see me,
But inside I am hiding a secret....
Inside I am WILD!!
Inside I am free....
