Time Can Not Stand Still

Time Can Not Stand Still

A Poem by Ryan Halterman

He will never forget the day he first laid eyes on her,
Time slowed almost to a halt...and then,
It stopped.
He looked at her frozen in time
Her golden hair
Her soft gentle face,
That smile that shows just a few of her upper teeth,
That smile that will knock you to the floor,
Her thin body that though we were young,
To me she was a woman,
To me she burned as bright as any star,
But as it goes time can not stand still....
And so his moment of beauty like he'd never seen....passed
But they were drawn to each other and met...just as they were supposed to....
The boy changed because of that girl,
He learned he could do anything if he loved her enough,
And he loved her very very much,
Before he had thought of love at first sight pure fantasy,
But sometimes even fantasy turns out to be truth,
The people who raised this love of his were not good people,
They kept her in her room...no friends.....no boys....no life
Just a black cat to keep her company....
And so when she was alone he would walk through any weather to reach her,
They met on top of a hill near her house with a shed to keep us out of sight,
And that is where he kissed her,
It was soft and sweet and that moment...that feeling forever burned into his mind,
When she was in danger he came and stole her away to keep her safe,
They ran through fields of tall grass hand in hand,
Beneath the moon the stars and everything that ever existed,
He kept her safe
He protected her
He was powerful,
He will save her,
And he kept after her until she was grown,
But as it goes time can not stand still....
The girl became a woman and the boy a man,
She left her home and made a life,
But the man could not go with her,
She didn't need protecting anymore,
She didn't need him,
And so he sat and thought,
His love, his purpose, his power.... It was gone.
She was gone.
What does a man do once his purpose is fulfilled?
He was proud of the woman he loved so dearly,
He was glad she was free and could be happy,
But now the man was alone....
Empty and lost.
Time no longer slowed
The stars stopped shining
He looked all across the sky and all was black,
The love he felt for her felt like a noose, chains, and weight...
And so he found the woman and read her every word...every feeling...every passion written on his heart.
She cried and walked away
And so he let her go
Knowing one day he would surely fade from her memory,
But knowing she would always burn like a star in his...
And as it goes time can not stand still....
So he started walking....
And as it goes time can not stand still....
