I don't believe we do need significant others, partners, in our lives. I know that if my marriage failed, partner died, I would happily live my life out on my own albeit with the same friend group.
My best mate of 55 years is making a right hash of his life since his wife died, this mainly due to the fact he finds bad company better than loneliness...strange
