Fortune CookieA by the wretched
they say the chinese use the same word for fortune as they do for misfortune. yesterday, i got a fortune cookie that stated "you will inherit some money or a small parcel of land". i believe this is a classic example of the chinese use of one word for two opposites. at first glance, you'd think, how lucky, i will get something of value! seems pretty fortunate, right?
but look at it on the other hand. in order for you to obtain said inheritence, someone has to die. not quite so lucky now, is it?
i wonder if there is such a thing as luck cancelling each other out. and if so, what does that leave you? fortune? misfortune? some sort of karmic purgatory inbetween? i can't say that i know.
but i take comfort in knowing that my fortune cookie was manufactured at some factory inside US borders, by some poor schlub who hates his job, thus effectively cancelling out all the mystical ancient magic of it all.
cause i'd hate for someone to have to die, just because i ate a cookie. © 2008 the wretched |
