Of and To Former Love

Of and To Former Love

A Poem by the wretched
"

wisdom for your hearts contentent

"

the reckoning has come and gone

though hard to tell what side you're on

as you sway, melodramatic

out of long held force of habit

unto one side, or t'other

whichever suits, you take for cover

until both shields, threadbare and worn

cast you off, contempted, scorned

till unto yourself an island made

you cannot have, and eat your cake

to thineself, and one, be true

lest loneliness bereft you too

Very interesting language. I like what you were trying to accomplish, but it seems a bit scattered. I especially liked the reference to Shakespeare's "to thine own self be true," although you might want to clean up that line a little: "thineself" doesn't sound right. It might be better to just say "to thine own self, and one, be true." Good job!
