She Skates 2/23/08A Poem by Secret Life of MeShe skates melancholy ribbons On to the ice, cutting it And knows the depth of sadness For a love who came too late – For jumps that crashed and quiet that came uninvited Friends she didn’t see From her doorstep in 1973, At the road’s end A gravel lane led off Into wonderland. But now she skates in her head Melancholy ribbons onto imaginary ice And jumps that crashed are landed Inviting quiet and the friends she now sees Were unknown in ‘73 And the love here Arrived just in time.
