mistakenly autobiographical

My name is dana

and i'm from Detroit.

And it ain't s**t.

And the irony is

that there are a lot

of 'ain't' s**t

places in America.

When I ride

the bus to the south

to see my grandmother

I see out the window

corn fields

and wheat fields and cows

that may, like the cartoons I've  watched,

moo. But since the windows

don't open you imagine it.

The sound I mean,

coming from the make believe cows.

Who condones make believe

animals in a world of many;

wrong destinations,

unmarried females, misunderstood

and underfunded churches on

every corner. You'de  think

you were in heaven.

But no Jesus grabs your hand

before you explode

and no God stores food

for you

under the steps.

i am just blown away by this piece---there is so much make believe, that is actually believed in, just so the reality won't feel so bad.

even with the windows shut tightly...i would still hear those cows moo...my Vermont cows were very real...but today? where is heaven?..was belinda carlile correct? "blue heaven is a place on earth:???
