Graveside

Graveside

I always pause
Near the end
Life lived well
Like few others

Always a sigh
For the anointer
Wiping His feet
With her hair

Wonder if she knew
Had He confessed
His mission
His sacrifice

He died
Never understood why
Am I really so awful
That he couldn’t enjoy life?

What could I do
To prevent it happening
This year
As it did in the last?

So much guilt
Placed upon me
From childhood
Mea culpa

He suffered
Mea culpa
No one came to his aid
Mea maxima culpa

Someone like me
Stood by His tortured body
Collected drops of blood
In her alabaster jar

United with her tears
Taken to safety
While He still
Walked the earth

Before He ascended
The goodbye
Never recorded
By men

Hearts divided
Through space
And time
Love which touches

Every generation
Since
One way
Or another
