Confession

Today

I saw a turtle

Crossing US20

At the intersection

Of County Road 35

I thought

It was

A tire remnant

At first

It was dark

Rain danced around it

Tauntingly

Remnants are common

On US 20

The turtle moved

So

Slowly

Knowing exactly

Where it was headed

I swerved

To avoid it

Wishing

It well

As I recognized

Life

Before me

I hoped

It could complete

Its journey

Unharmed

By passing cars

And barreling trucks

On their way

To Chicago

And beyond

I envied him

His courage

His persistence

His will

To reach

The other side

No matter

The danger

As I realized

What a magnificent

Sight

I beheld

I considered

Stopping

To hurry

Its progress

For its

Safety’s sake

But I saw

The car

Behind me

Stop

To let it

Pass

So I drove on

Instead

In my rush

To get

Where I needed

To go
