White Noise

White Noise

A Poem by Doreen
"

Inspired by Image 15 from the 'Picture This' writing group. A bit late, but inspired nonetheless.

"

I glimpse behind the costume you wear

and don’t much like what I see.

Empty visions on the screen,

dramatic clamoring over

things mattering naught.

Senselessness  blinding

the minds

of

generations

fresh with youth and

crippling, near-sighted vision.

A world of lemmings jumping into

white noise, an abyss of sacrifice to self,

-loathing - not of injustice or ignorance, but

of individuals, ideas and ideals that once were.

I thought I'd reviewed this before, but clearly I hadn't. My belated apologies for that negligence - since it was written for my group (which unfortunately fizzled out at the time).

This is an effectively damning and very well written polemic on the effects of mass media television. Its relationship with the image is a very perceptive one.
The most telling phrase is this:
"fresh with youth and
crippling, near-sighted vision."
It's interesting how "near-sighted" has two meanings here: sat close to the screen and paying too much constant attention to it; and in a wider sense it is the narrow perspective manufactured by its influence.
And the connection between "self" parenthesised by "loathing" and the final conclusion is also replete with prophetic meaning.
A very good piece of work. (though I can't recall the other entries in order to tell you that it would have won - it would have been an extremely strong contender though)

I'm pretty sure I wrote this after that particular Capture closed. The picture inspired me too late.. read more

So very true. We're blind until we can see. :) Thank you.

anytime...
lol...you could never be an ant. An astute social comment wrapped in the sheerest shroud of hope (background). It does talk to the human condition, one that needs to go to the gym. Lol...great writing Doreen!

Thank you, Crowley. This is a huge compliment coming from a great writer such as yourself.
Wonderfully expressed. I always tell my kids to grab a book rather than watch the mundane garbage (usually repeats) on TV. Great piece.

Kudos! I'm a huge advocate of reading, too. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. :)
Hey! I'm a penguin too! I hate white noise. I hate it I tell ya. Are you listening to me? Shut it off and put your little costume back on too! Have you looked at yourself under there lately?
Great poem!
