Fortune Cookie

Fortune Cookie

A Story by Dreamgirl23732
"

Embark on an enthralling adventure with Samantha as she embarks on an unexpected journey of self- discovery.

"
The wind didn't howl it screamed! The rain didn't fall it was driven- hard, merciless, torrential. The trees didn't sway they creaked, bent and moaned as their fine limbs were ripped away. What had started as some high winds and a smattering of rain had turned into a fierce storm.
While she scrambled for shelter, Samantha suddenly glimpsed the little chinese restaurant nestled between the looming mountains. As soon as she burst though its doors, delicious aromas wafted around her, making her mouth water. She was on her her way to meet her friends at a decided spot before they, together, embarked on an expedition to the mighty mountains. However the terrible turn that the weather had taken had caused her to make a little unplanned stop. The warmth of the cozy restaurant enveloped her as she sunk into the nearest chair and ordered for some food to appease her grumbling stomach.

After a delicious meal, she rubbed her hands in glee as a gleaming plate was placed in front of her. Right in the middle, sat a little fortune cookie. As she eagerly cracked the cookie open, she read the message aloud " “you will achieve your heart’s desire.

Her heart’s desire! She felt like she could explode with excitement as she read those words. Her enthusiasm however, slightly dampened when she realized that she had no idea what her heart’s desire was! Superpowers? Gleaming mounds of money stacked in a secret vault? Whatever it was, she just couldn’t wait to find out.

And so she rushed to the little old fortuneteller who sat in a dingy corner of the restaurant. “What’s my heart’s desire?” she asked, bubbling with excitement. The fortuneteller gave her an incredulous look before he handed her another fortune cookie, amusement sparkling in his eyes. Confused, Samantha cracked the cookie open, only to find a blank slip staring back at her. She finally sighed in exasperation, feeling horribly cheated as she exited the restaurant.

Faint wisps of cloud wreathed the azure sky, the flower perfumed air was alive with the song of birds but at that moment, all Samantha could think of was the daunting sight that loomed before her. The weather had now cleared up and she had finally met her friends (who had tried, on her insistence to come up with various desires her heart could possibly yearn for!). Their journey had gotten off to a brilliant start but Samantha now stood in front of a fragile bridge over 2000 metres above the ground that had to be crossed in order for the journey to continue. As her friends began to shuffle impatiently waiting for her to cross, fear paralyzed her clamping over her heart like a cold hand. “One snap. One snap of a flimsy rope and I will fall into the abyss, become an undistinguishable part of the tiny specks below!” she thought, terrified. Behind was a winding path that stretched over kilometers. There was no going back.

Samantha could hear her heart pounding loudly as she gingerly stepped onto the bridge, her eyes tightly closed. She could hear her rapid, shallow breaths as she mustered up the courage to take the next step. Slowly she opened her eyes, advancing cautiously and doubt eventually turned to exhilaration as she reached the other side unscathed. Adrenaline pumped through her veins as she experienced a new thrill, an unearthly happiness!

Nascent sunlight caressed her skin, promising a new dawn. She now finally realized the true meaning behind the message of the second fortune cookie.  She closed her eyes, envisioning her future- one that she would write, build and direct herself. With each stride, a new wave of courage coursed through her melting the icy shards of fear. She was now a girl walking into her destiny, one that lay solely in her hands not with a Chinese fortuneteller, not with her closest friends and most definitely not with a measly fortune cookie!

The skies rumbled in appreciation and showered their praise as Samantha finally found herself and in doing so, unknowingly, achieved her heart’s deepest desire.

This story really reminded me of a fable. I thought you could add more in the restaurant part, maybe describe the smells and the meal that was served. I could see the restaurant and I was there but I felt it could be made more vivid (just personal preference maybe) I liked the ending and loved the opening. really nice story.
