Unreasoning ReasonsA Poem by drcorneliusThere are a lot of reasons folks sign up to go and kill A paycheck, patriotism, for glamour or the thrill But one thing to remember as you think it through and through At the end of the day you’re killing Someone pretty much like you Johnnie signed up to join the fight just like his dad and grandpa Lou Never thought of wrong or right Just something he had to do Johnnie’s brother signed up He had three mouths to feed There were no jobs in the county So the Army filled the need Jimmy lived just down the road He’d do anything for a thrill The Marines was the only place He’d get paid to make a kill Joe went off to Viet Nam Because of something called the draft Wife and baby made no difference We made him learn the killing craft Sam dearly loved his country His heart fluttered with the flag He left in a brand new uniform Then returned in a body bag Mahmod and Kasim loved their land In endless deserts they would play Now they too rest in body bags Manufactured in the good old USA Yes there are so many reasons Folks sign up to go and kill None of these reasons work for me So I guess I never will © 2018 drcornelius |
