PaeanA Poem by Archipelagofor a friend who deserved moreAshes to thunder Lights out at home The door slowly opens Let the gas leak some more It’s killing me slowly My breath’s shallow now I might last the night now If the weather holds The shed holds a secret The priest knows a spell The woods offer comfort The gate cages Hell The sprits are woken The air is renewed The long chill is broken But my strength is as well I thought you said “slowly” I thought it would hurt Before he was ready He passed out on the floor He’s breathing so slowly Send for all the king’s men What good will it do now? For years he’s been dead It happened so slowly But what could we do? Sure, we all saw it coming But walk in our shoes If every action In everyone’s lives Was to help out another Could our species survive? If every Eleanor Rigby Was granted a smile How long would we mean it? How long ‘til we tired? Things are better on mountains And in ocean depths And in caves and in forests Than in places of rest I say let the priest wander Let him find his true home Let him find He won’t travel alone
So, slowly, so slowly, ease out the door Go at your own pace, you are not alone
