The One

The One

A Poem by Archipelago
"

smile, people are watching

"

I'm wishing you the worst

I'm sorry but it's true

All these things I've done and seen have sucked

And they send me back to you

And I love you in the morning

When your arms are open wide

But as the night goes on you tire

And you leave me out to dry

I'm sorry but it's true

I love you without doubt

But I hope you grow old alone and

Cry until your eyes fall out

So that you need me

As much as I need you

You say you miss me too

But you haven't got the emptiness to prove it

And maybe I'll forget

All those awful things I said

In the dark night when the morning rolls around

But for now let's just pretend

That this night will never end

Will you come back or are you still too proud?

Save your sounds, I know, I know

I always make you hurt when you don't

But so do those pills you hide under your bed

When you're out of tequila you choke them down dry

They taste like death but they keep you feeling alive

Why else would you keep them and lie to your dad?

He wants those things flushed

But waste is a sin

And you love them when things get rough

We know who we are to each other

Whatever the rest of them think

Smoke in bottles and dust on mirrors and

Late night talks in parking lots and

Diner dinners and borrowed cars and

Shitshow partners and windshield art and

Sexless lovers

And the thousand other little things we use to keep sane

When it feels like we're falling apart

Soulmates

Who play call and response all night long

Until the moon gets covered

And the lights turn out

And the clock spins around

And starts over again

And we wander away without a goodbye

Practicing to perfect the art of withdrawal

Of staring hopelessly at the empty dark sky

Bracing for the winter that's only just begun

Getting used to driving alone

Through the snow and the Cold

That sets in

Over and

Over

Again
