Curtains Closed

A Poem by Danielle Teresa
"

the end of a relationship

"

months ahead of time

our tickets reserved

the best seats I could find

not good enough for you

what ever is?

a ballet, I would never choose, unless for you

anything for a smile

waiting to be seated

room full--of lovers, families and bright-eyed children anticipating the yearly performance

a room full--me and you

looking back I realize the obvious disconnection

the facade we created

our "picture perfect" photos that hid the unrelenting dysfunction

as I sat beside you--hands together

hearts far behind

the show begins

the set- a winter wonderland of hopes and dreams

of a young girl on Christmas morning

dreaming of a better life

A little girl seated in front stands in awe of the delight as she watches the enchanted ballerina take flight

I smile at the sight

looking back I can’t remember one genuine from you

the entire night...

my eyes locked on the stage watching magical toys come to life...

I, the one being toyed with...

your eyes locked on your phone

mind elsewhere

as the curtain closes the crowd stands and applauds...

little did I know it was our show that ended...

our curtain closed

Very honestly and emotionally written. Brilliant use of language and metaphor: your contrast between the ballet and the drama in your own life is related extremely well to the reader. I love all of the double meanings and the flow of your work here. Isn't it bittersweet how retrospect can be the clearest viewpoint of all? Lovely, beautiful work. Thank you for sharing.
