Let It RainA Poem by dovetailerthe calm before...and after...the storm...Let it Rain like
impending doom the low
grey clouds gather ominous
in their darkness approaching
like
the dust of an angry horde in the distance the
harbinger breeze heralds the
inevitable deluge with
rumbling thunder the
fluttering flashes of lightning here
and gone and
here again palpable
tension smells
of ether in the air the
dampness in the wind on our
face as we wait stillness like
the moment before a
stifling sneeze... big...wet...kamikaze
drops make
the leaves dance as they
take the brunt of the first
rasher of raindrops like
spies checking out the Promised Land... the
first wave... plink...plink...plink on the
shed tin roof plop...plop...plop in the
back yard bird bath erupting disrupting
serenity of the surface stillness splat...splat...splat spattering wet
drops on the dry deck... first
five then a
hundred... a
thousand.... a
million falling from the pregnant sky arriving
like a wall of wispy water through the trees the
lightning strikes like
preemptive artillery from a
vengeful God the
shout of the rain and the
booms of thunder so close I feel
the crash in my bones I stand
in the storm... fearlessly
face the fray soaked
to the skin immersed
in the mounting maelstrom no
quarter sought... no
quarter given... water
washed over my windows my world through
the gutters and downpipes wending
its way down
the driveways to the drains... coursing
along the curbs... relentless
in its race to the sea and
I...enrapt endure
to the end stopping
as swiftly as it started the
storm bids “adieu “ leaving
a drip-dry world in its
watery wake cleansed and as
the clouds depart on a
westerly wind they
leave a blaze of blue sky and
soothing sunshine giving
wetted ways a
glittery gleam until gone... soon, the
birds sing and
like the passing storm life
