these old shoesA Poem by dovetailermy favorite pairthese old shoes +++ these
shoes are worn from being worn for
miles they’ve been my friend we’ve
shared so many, many steps our
friendship nears the end + when
they were new...all stiff and shined we
seemed at odds back then they
gave me blisters, aches and pains remember
way back when? + just
like a husband and a wife we chafed...each
had our way but day
by day and step by step we
heard the other’s say + I gave
a little...they did too the
friction eased away we both
conformed to what we’re now there
was no other way + and
o’er the years you’ve been with me protected
me from pain from
glass or stones or thorns so sharp and
other things profane + protected
me from heat and cold in
dampness shared our fate through
thick and thin we’ve comrades been they’ve
kept me walking straight + but now
they’re tired and scuffed and spent a hole
worn in each sole no
longer new, they smell of me they
have fulfilled their role + they gave
and gave and gave again with
comfort non-pareil I’m sad
to think their time has come my
wistfulness is real + I look
at them held in my hand I do
the prudent thing I place
them sadly in the trash and in
a new pair bring +++ © 2010 dovetailerReviews
