you were but a shadow in the darkness

I could have missed you if my own

somber solitude

hadn’t made my pupils

wary, wide, and black...

sensitive to every

gleaming  thing...

there was a warm glow

in your eyes...

...not feral red...

like eyes of beasts

that gnash their teeth

awaiting the chance to pounce and devour...

but a warm, pleasant glow that

reassured me...

 

...you were there...

 

it was loneliness that made hope spring up in me...

...made me proffer my hand

...pray you would be real...

my heart hummed the tune

“Nearer My God to Thee”

as I felt your small soft hand

 

...grasping mine...

 

I drew you into my light...

as you stepped from the shadow...

you graced my sight for the very first time...

you caused a smile to break my mourning mask...

...like a welcomed dawn after a long dark night...

and a pleasured “gasp”

filled my chest...

 

...you were that beautiful...

 

you smiled too...and when you did

the darkness fled

to the corners of the room

and we basked in the brilliance

of our candid conversation

and the sudden burning we both felt

 

...deep inside...
