BREAK THE CYCLE

BREAK THE CYCLE

A Poem by Dori

BREAK THE CYCLE
On the other side of the wall
Screaming and yelling
Glass breaking
Smashing furniture
The vile sound of a smack
The girls run to me
Afraid of their father
As he attacks their mother
Crying and shaking
As the sounds esculate
I try to dial 911
But my mother grabs the phone
And hides it so I can't call
The bully next door is my brother
The subliminal message is heard
Teaching my neices
To tolerate and endure
The abuse of a man, any man
Filled with outrage and disgust
"How can you let this happen?"
I say to my mother
"Look at what they are learning"
Filled with love and hate
They don't know what to do
Trying to survive
Ashamed and afraid
Break the cycle
Put him in jail
Throw away the key
And councel him
Enough is too much
Blackened eyes
Broken nose
Not the message
For these girls to receive
I am helpless
Hopeless
And disgusted
He cries and begs
When the damage is done
It'll never happen again
...until the next time!
