His grandmother Francisca would dip her pinky finger into the coffee and let him suck it when he was a baby. He would follow her around and cry for more. His Abuela would laugh and call him a crazy little coffee bean, a bean loco. It is as if he was destined to be a great Maestro Asado. One day, his father, Don Pedro Loco, looked at his boy with pride who was now a young man of 13 years old walking the fields pinching off any black beetles that tried to eat the plants and pruning off the dead leaves to ensure better growth. He felt joy for the opportunities that lay before him wanting him to live a full life and explore the world. It was his father’s passion for exploration that brought the family farm to be, but for many generations, no one had explored the world beyond the mountains. Soon it would be time to expand the family business and give Don Loco a legacy of his own. On the evening of Don Loco’s 15th birthday, Don Pedro gave young Don Loco his first book of knowledge. This book was not filled with adventure stories, but with ancient recipes and lessons to make the perfect cup of coffee. Don Loco, while happy to get a gift from his father, was not thrilled to get an old book filled with recipes. Why would his father give him what was essentially a cookbook? Confused, but not wanting to appear ungrateful or hurt his father’s feelings, Don Loco thanked his father and placed the book next to his bed. That night, while laying down, Don Loco opened the book and read a note that his grandfather Don Chiro Rafael Loco wrote to his father, Don Pedro. This sparked his interest; maybe this dusty old book was worth reading after all. Don Loco read; “To my son on his 15th birthday, may your days be filled with joy and laughter and may your years be long enough to one day give this book to your own son. The secrets inside this book are only taught to the head maestro of the Loco family farm. Cherish it and guard it as your most valuable possession. I do not exaggerate when I tell you lives have been lost over coffee beans. This book must never be lost or shared with anyone outside of the family. My greatest wish is that my grandchildren come to live life with passion and purpose, and I pray that our Finca de cafe` is one day known as the place where the world’s greatest coffee originates.” To learn more about Don Loco Coffee visit www.BeanLoco.com. © 2022 Don LocoAuthor's Note
