Smell

Smell

A Poem by D. Mansfield

Smells so bad,
I quit using my nose.
Could've picked you,
But it was me they chose.

The white stripe, down their back
Was a disguise.
Their hearts were black
as coal inside.

Provisioned with all,
we could give.
Put us in cages
so they could live.

Head is spinning,
It's so hard to know.
Life has been, a tv show.

Sorting through it,
Wears you down.
Sinking quickly,
Your going to drown.

a riveting work, it felt like moving down a coal mine. it is claustrophobic and full of unease, yet the rhymes kept my eyes moving to the next line. there's something bluesy and lyrical about this piece, which i enjoyed a lot.
