Tripping over paper

Tripping over paper

A Poem by D. Mansfield

You were riding piggy back, through the darkness
Tripping over paper, placed under your tongue.
There was a man chasing us,
through the woods with a gun.

 It was heavy, that trip,
Only now do I feel the weight.
We laughing our way through the woods,
With me adjusting my gait.

I was faster with you on my shoulders,
faster, than I've ever been.
When I lost you, the next morning,
I went back to the party again.

Forty years have passed, without seeing your face.
I still look for you, just in case.
Still I hope, sometimes I have dreams,
Of running through that woods, with you on my shoulders, again.

Recurring dreams of yesteryear's events is very finely penned in this poem, D. It is strange how we sometimes dream of things which happened many years ago in our younger days and I wonder if it's due to a longing to return to those now, old days, once more. Memory is truly a wonderful gift and we can relive our memories again and again and again and of course, we can continue to dream too. An excellently penned poem which I so enjoyed reading. Lovely work and thank you for sharing, D...
