Nightmare! In Dream World

Nightmare! In Dream World

A Poem by Danielle Landry

I close my eyes and slowly drift to sleep,

Wishing,

Hoping,

Praying for peace.

My dream starts off in serenity.

Then, a stranger comes and steals the tranquility I worked hard for,

And replaces my harmony with turmoil.

Rape!

Murder!

Robbery!

I quickly awaken in a cold sweat,

Feeling as if my nightmare was my reality.

My ears perk up,

Listening for some indication that my family’s ok.

My hands frantically roam over my clammy body,

Making sure it still has its’ innocence.

My mind tries to clear itself

And make sense of what happened,

Not coming up with anything.

Nightmares have taken over my subconscious,

Refusing to allow me to sleep,

Causing insomnia,

Bringing my worst nightmares to life.

I look in the mirror,

Noticing the dead look in my eyes,

Wishing I was someone else.

I fight sleep as long as possible,

Until it becomes too much to bear.

My eyes,

Heavy with sleep,

Slowly begin to fall,

And I slowly drift to sleep,

Terrified what lies behind my closed eyes.
