Chapter 1A Chapter by DaveMcTheir family had survived for centuries, and lived in peace with their surroundings. Until one day. The two brothers where torn apart by love and betrayal. A love child was born and hidden for yearsChapter One Lurking in the shadows of the train station, Laura had been there every night for the past three weeks. She stood behind a pillar so she could see him, but he could not see her. Constantly glancing over her shoulder as if someone watched her. She turned back just to make sure he was still there, alive. She heard a scream and ran like the wind. Off she went down one of the train tunnels, chasing this very fast moving shadow. She detected the scent, a pungent blood soaked scent, and was sure that it would be caught tonight. It seemed to move faster than anything she had ever known. She came to a dead stop glanced around the dank, moist, and desperately dark tunnels. The only light in there was from very sparse and dim fluorescents that made many shadows to hide in. She remarked to herself “I can understand why they would hide out down here. Easy to hunt for food at the stations. Not be heard above the noise of the trains. Suited to the scum of the earth most defiantely”. She always felt uneasy down here, and now she could feel that she was being watched. Rustling noises surrounded her. Suddenly, the tunnel was filled with wild, manic laughter of a raving lunatic. She caught sight of something moving in a side tunnel. She edged over to it. There it was, out of the bleak, unforgiving darkness, she could see the face of pure evil. Pale, ghostly white skin, and bloodshot cat-like eyes stared back at her, laughing. It stood half in and out of the shadows, tapping it's long tapered fingers on the wall. Just waiting to pounce, ravage what it could to feed on. As she gazed into the shadows she noticed that it’s fingers where covered in blood, and realised it must of already fed for the night. She could feel something under her feet. Soft, and squishy. She caught the scent. A forbidden scent. The smell of death. She feared to look down, as the creature was close by. She continued to edge over to the shadows, watching for any slight movement. Suddenly, she lost her footing, slipping in the remains. Quickly she looked back up at the shadows and realised it had gone. “Damn, it got away, again. I'll have to catch it soon, this cannot carry on” she said Looking down at the horrible mess it had left behind she thought How did I get roped into this? Human waste disposal!. She then set about the task at hand, to clean up after her own kind. Staring at himself in the mirror, while brushing his teeth, Stuart thought, You look about fifty years old, what happened to you?. The truth of the matter is that, although he felt fifty years old, he was in fact only twenty seven. After pausing, he pondered the thought, washed his face, combed his hair, and went into the kitchen to make some coffee. He pulled on his shirt, looked around for his keys, and his mp3 player. “Where are they?” He moaned. He had a string of failed relationships. The most recent was Claire, who would constantly leave messages on his answer machine. It's not like she wasn't a nice girl, but I wasn't looking for anything heavy, and besides, she was a very obsessive person, he would always justify to himself for splitting up with her, and he couldn't handle her obsessiveness. In any event he always checked his answer machine before leaving for work, and today was no exception. After listening to four or five messages, he lost count, Stuart decided to leave for the tube station. He walked towards the elevator. When he got there he pressed the button to call the elevator, and stood staring at his surroundings. Looking at the graffiti on the walls, and sniffing a vile smell of urine, he mused, What a wonderful apartment block this is, and to think, it costs me $750 a month. You'd think the janitor would clean up once in a while. The elevator doors opened to reveal a full car. Stuart squeezed in between a rather large lady, and a someone, who to all intent and purposes, looked like a druggie. He held his breathe as long as he could, as the car stunk of piss and bad body odours. By the time they got to the lobby, he was ready to pass out, and was glad to be the first out of the car. Quickly he made his way over to the tube station. Forty five minutes later he arrived at work, to find a stack of paperwork sat on his desk. His heart sank shrugging his shoulders. Great, first thing on a Monday morning, and I have a massive stack of s**t to do. All I need now is that over bearing idiot to come marching in making all kinds of stupid demands. Just as he sat down, Barry came waddling over to the office, doughnut in one hand, and coffee in the other. He always seemed to have stains of his most recent meals on his ties that, by the way, never seemed to be fully around his neck, as his top button would never be closed. He was a portly kind of chap, who would sweat in any weather, stains in the arms pits of his shirts, and his bald head gleaming of the same. Stuart would know when he got close, as his scent always proceeded him. “Right, s**t for brains” Barry yelled at Stuart. “I need all this paperwork processing by noon today” “You are joking, there's at least three days work here” Stuart replied. “Well, if you can't do it, am sure there are plenty of people out there who can” Barry snorted. “I'll have it done, Barry”. “I know you will” Barry said puffing his chest out. Stuart just looked at the stack, his head dropped. Barry turned around and walked out the office. Stuart gave him the finger as soon as he turned his back. “I can see you, Stuart!” Barry said. Stuart, didn't care if Barry saw him or not, begrudgingly got stuck into the paperwork. The day dragged on for Stuart, he gazed up at the clock on the wall, 3pm it read, “Is that all the time is?” he asked wearily. How did I end up in this s****y job? He sat at his desk, looking out of the 23rd floor window, pondering that there must be more to life than this, Nothing ever happens, it's the same old s**t every day. Barry being a jerk, Claire ringing me every five minutes, debt collectors chasing payments. It's just so mundane, there must be a way out of it. Time passed as Stuart carried on day dreaming, and five o'clock soon came around. He was gathering his stuff together, when Barry came in. “And just where do you think your going?” he asked. “Home, because I live there!” Stuart said. “I don't think so kiddo. These numbers don't add up.” He threw Stuart's work for the day onto his desk. “You have to be kidding?” Stuart asked. “I'll do it tomorrow”. “You won't. You will stay tonight and get it finished” Barry said. “What?” Stuart said in a resigned tone, shoulders dropping. “Just get it done numb nuts, I am going home. See you bright and early tomorrow” Barry quipped as he left. “Fantastic, the day just gets worse.” Stuart said as he sat down to get on with it. Lifting up the papers, which where all stuck together with sugar from Barry's doughnuts, Stuart felt nauseous like he was going to be sick. It seemed like all he every did lately was work late...... By 7pm Stuart had had enough and was getting fed up with the work he had to do. “F**k it, I am going home” he said. He got his things together, and headed off to the train station. At the ticket office, the girl behind the desk said, “Working late again?” “That jerk at the office kept me back again, yeah” “Thanks for the ticket, and have a nice night”. While waiting for the train he listenied to his music, and flicked through his magazine he just bought. He couldn't get into it, so he put it down How sad is this? The same platform, same bench, and the same train every night. My god everything about my life is so boring. If someone was to write a book about me, it would be so dull, and a good book to fall asleep too I am sure. He continued to sit in silence, listening to his music until his train arrived. The next morning, Stuart's alarm clock went off as normal, and so his ritual began. Cursing the day ahead, and the fact that Barry would soon be on his case for not finishing his work last night, just made him feel so much better. After getting ready, he made his coffee, and turned on his answer machine. After a few messages from Claire, he gave up listening and went off to work. He arrived at the office, and saw Barry by his desk, waiting for him. Great, that jerk is going to give me a hard time, and I can't be bothered today. As he got closer to the office he worked out what excuse he was going to give him for leaving before finishing last night. Just as he was about to impart with his excuse, Barry cut him dead. “What the f**k do you call this?” he yelled. And before Stuart could get any answer out, he continued, “Get this done today or your sacked” he slammed the office door shut on the way out. I just don't need this. As mid afternoon came around Stuart found himself day dreaming again, but this time he was more upset with himself for not standing up to that jerk Barry. Why do I put up with this?. Your still here because it pays the bills, numb nuts. Memories came into Stuart’s mind about Barry, and the way he was being treated lately. Stuart was deep in thought, when the snap of the pencil, he was holding, brought him back round, out of his day dreaming. He laughed, and at the seemly endless time he would have to continue working here, until his debts where paid off. Once again he had to work late, and when 7pm rolled around, he started to make his way to the train station. Again, he had the same conversation with the ticket girl. Is everyone so predictable in this world? Is there no variety?. He sat down at his favoured bench, turned on his music, and just looked around to see what was happening. It's even quiet down here tonight. I wonder where everyone is?. Then, as he fiddled with his music player and he glanced up. What he saw would stay with him for the rest of his life. Out of no where this majestic woman, the most beautiful woman he every seen, walked past him, in what seemed like slow motion. She wore a black bodysuit, knee high biker boots, and a full length leather coat on. The wind that rushed up from the tunnels blew her brunette her. He sat there looking in awe not able to move. She glanced at him, and gave him a small but definite smile. Stuart fumbled with his music player nearly dropping it. He saved the player from hitting the floor, he looked back up, only to find that she had vanished into thin air. He jumped to his feet and looked for her. He looked behind pillars, in alcoves, anywhere she could hide, but he couldn't find her. That's just my luck. I see the most beautiful woman ever, and she just vanishes. Surely I wasn't imagining it? He had his back to the approaching train, still mesmerized by this fantastic woman, so much so he nearly forgot to get on the train itself. When he did realise he had to go, he stepped onto the train leaving the platform empty. “I shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't show myself to humans that I don't know. I am supposed to be protecting them, not exposing them to that menace” Laura said to herself. Again hiding in the shadows, as she watched Stuart’s train pull away. She ran off, fast as lightening, after the menace that was the scourge of the tunnels late at night. No screams tonight, might not have fed yet! I'd better be quick before it attacks. She could only smell the fiend that lurked in the shadows, a blood stained scent, pungent and rancid, laughing at her, knowing that it would be hard to catch. Then, she caught sight of the face of evil. This is what the virus did to her coven. Slowly she drew her gun, ready to shoot. She was always on her guard, never knowing what it would do, or what it was capable of. It flew past her, knocking her to one side. She crashed against the tunnel wall, heart racing, breathing erratically, fearing for her own life. Not much scared her, but this was something totally different, something she never ever thought could exist. This thing could kill her tonight, right now, if it wished it so. Something dribbled down her face. It had caught her, scratched her face and made her bleed. She wiped the blood away, and looked at it, rubbing it between two fingers and her thumb. Then she wiped it on her coat. The shadow stopped up ahead, and looked at her from over it’s shoulder. Just for a split second, she thought she recognised the face, then realised she was getting caught up in the creatures glare. She managed to pull her eyes away, before she fell under spell. “You'll never catch me, I will feed again tonight” it said at her. Looking back at the creature she raised her weapon, ready to take out this most heinous of creatures “Eat this!” Laura shouted. She got a shot off, but it moved too fast, and it missed and ricocheted off the walls. “S**t!” she said to herself. It laughed in the distance. Then, she took off again in pursuit of the evil fiend. © 2010 DaveMcAuthor's Note
