Boiled Dinner

Boiled Dinner

A Poem by Debbie Barry
"

A new nursery rhyme about the 18th Century, illustrating the poverty and food of the time, written in the style of the time.

"

Boiled Dinner

I have a bit of flour,

There’s milk here in the cup,

I’ll mix them up and boil,

On pudding we will sup.

I’ve a bag of green peas,

I’ve oats, and scraps of meat;

I’ll mix them up and boil,

Good porridge we may eat.

I’ve caught me some fishes,

I’ve small potatoes here;

I’ll mix them up and boil,

And soup will give us cheer.

Initial reactions and constructive criticism welcome. This is meant to resemble a traditional nursery rhyme. Pudding was a sort of boiled bread, not the dessert we know today.

I agree entirely, but I much prefer fish like cod, shellfish, and clams and scallops.
Hi Debbie, I happen to love the time period of old! The word choices are spot on and the feel is exactly were it needs to be! Well done! Please write on!
