The Chimney Lad

The Chimney Lad

A Poem by Debbie Barry
"

A new nursery rhyme about the 18th Century, illustrating the poverty of the time, written in the style of the time.

"

The Chimney Lad

You’re all black as a coal, my lad,

How came you be this way?

I am a chimneysweep, good sir;

I brush soot all the day.

But you are very young, my lad,

And ought to run and play.

My fam’ly lives in poverty,

So I must earn my way.
