Bang. There it is again, thought Tom. He had been sleeping peacefully in his bed when he heard the sounds of banging from outside of his door. He quickly bumbled out of bed, pulling on pants and a flannel shirt he had lying on his floor, and he rushed out of the room, a baseball bat in his hand. Something was coming through the door. He thought it might've been an intruder; there had been numerous break ins for the past week where drunk teens would go through peoples houses (the houses on this block were rich, so they got some rather expensive valuables) and had stolen away into the night. Tom stepped forward cautiously, looking out of the window into the milky blackness. He saw nothing of alarm. But there is was again. Bang, Bang

bang. He moved to the front door and looked out. Again he saw nothing but darkness. He moved through the kitchen. The sound was getting a bit louder.
Tom was a writer. He was a writer who wrote about government affairs, intrigue, spies, the military, having published several non-fiction works about how the government had turned out, as well as fiction stories of spies and military soldiers.
