Ballad of the GuardsmanA Poem by Dreamer137this is a true story and really did happen last night. i hope my prayers reach the man upstairs. On our way home
we started a fight
mom forgot her cigarettes
at the restaurant last night.
so we went back
they weren't there
so she bought a new pack
and we left with no cares.
it was raining out
so we drove a little slow
taking the back roads
thank God there wasn't snow.
then we saw flashing lights
and mom hit the brakes
there'd been an accident
the sight we couldn't take.
she pulled the truck over
and told us to stay put
i called 911
and found a flashlight to boot.
i told my brother
to stay in the truck
i took them the flashlight
across the muck.
i went to the truck
and sat back in my seat
my tears and my sadness
my eyelids couldn't keep.
the car was smashed
like an aluminum can
there was only one person
inside of the van.
my mother told me
all she could see
were ACU's and a stroller
in the back seat.
a young guardsman
who was on his way home
had hit the ditch line
and then he rolled.
help arrived
not long after
but he was gone
up somewhere higher.
God calls us home
when it is our day
but why did he take
such a young life away?
