Colors

A Poem by Audrey Howitt

My flowers are beautiful, technique mixte, 2003 par Jean-Philippe Carpentier

my world is small,

a package no bigger than

a shoebox,

tightly wrapped

in the tones of grey paint.

i would rather,

a pale peach

or sea foam.

and so color swatches

hang on my refrigerator

suspended by brightly colored

button magnets.

i shuffle them

according to my mood.

today I have noticed how well

sea foam and pale lavender

look together--

the flower and the stalk--

so soothing.

and so, my magnets have arranged

themselves

accordingly.

but I am already eyeing

a pale peach and cream combo.

how does one decide

on the colors

to wrap oneself up in?

perhaps my magnets will decide for me.

paint by default.

one thing is certain,

there are no swatches of grey.

Again you read without effort and cannot take your eyes from your words as they melt off the page. Lovely that there is no grey in your life!

Thank you again John! I so appreciate your comments!
I loved how this would flow as the story unfolded in something as simple as colors. It was smooth and expressive. Loved it!

Thank you so much Melody!
Beautiful writing yet again. When I decorate I tend to get little pots of every shade of a favored colour and paint little squares all over the wall. This patchwork remains until a decision is made - sometimes for months- and at times it has saddened me to paint over them - so I can well relate to your delemna - you have captured it in such a charming way

Yes thats right and you are welcome
This is wonderful! It speaks to me of dreams, and choices, and examining one's life. I love the refrigerator magnets reference as the things most pressing and/or most loved and dreamed about are often found in that focal point. Thank you...I would not chose grey either.
These lines are some of my favorite:
"my world is small,
a package no bigger than
a shoebox,
tightly wrapped
in the tones of grey paint."

Magnetical powers, are highly sensitive, in physics. Well said. As I have my fridge full of button magnets, from every country I was... a reminder, a thought, a memory. I love this write, it came through me. All has a wonderfull value, some see others don't, you did!

ah yes...I remember why I liked this one so well. It reminds me too of all the pretty pictures my children create for me. They never paint in grey...colors are strong...bright...every rainbow...it makes me smile.

Audrey you move your swatches around like I decide what words to paint with each day.......I understand this piece and it is brilliant.

Oh, yes, colors evoke emotion and affect us in different ways. The refrigerator, a comforting place which holds happiness (laughs) but is a common and recognizable object. Very unique piece you have here... I like it a lot!
