![]() The KiteA Poem by Audrey Howitt![]() For my sister who wanted a poem a little Edward Gorey like about a kite--still feeling a bit rough![]() Summer pushed into Autumn And Autumn pushed back With biting breezes, Lofting kites into steely skies Across fields of grass and wildflowers Poised to languish in the dampness soon to follow. The boy ambles among crackling grasses Kite in hand. The wind sharpens its serrated blades Upon downdrafts as it ruffles dark hair, Pushing excitement to prime as adrenaline pumps. Standing back, he lets go The kite soars eagerly as wind pushes it upward in glee. Exhilarated by kite’s sudden lift, the boy releases too much string. Kite roams, Pockets of dance left to the wildness of desire. Nearby tree, branches distended by ravenous hunger Snatches kite and eats it For breakfast. © 2011 Audrey HowittReviews
