Autumn's Fire

Autumn's Fire

A Poem by Audrey Howitt
"

A poem about reawakening love

"

I view you not gentle soul.

You hide amidst the tall green rushes

Evading my line of sight.

Press your pale countenance,

Cool, upon my as yet fevered brow

And fill this evening’s gloom

With the glitter of dusky fragrance

That I may recall the lightness

Of an unencumbered morning.

Whisper again to me in verses of

Amber hue the words of sweet love’s lessons

long gone from this heart rent in two.

Mend this mind with the shimmer of vibratoed tones

Sweet upon the ear,

Honeyed upon your breath.

Touch my breast with fingertips enlivened

With the art of Eros--

That this forgotten body

May recall again

The frequency of the formant

Of fire’s fondness within it.

Amen to the heart which bestows such a gift.

Ouch:

"That I may recall the lightness

Of an unencumbered morning"

Lovely. Honey to my ear Audrey, honey to my ear. Thanks to you.

"Autumn's Fire" may not burn often--and that not by choice--but it does flare bright and hot when properly ignited.
Your poem is mature and magnificent, Audrey--lovely of lyric; dazzling in metaphor.
(Though I haven't smoked since 1979, I just had the strongest urge to light a cigarette.)
Excellent work, A.

A poem that deserves to be spoken with a whisper, I love the beginning, as if love is hiding in the rushes. Beautiful.

My Dear Writing Friend,
I enjoyed your thought-provoking poem, which I mused for hours. I felt two words were key to you extremely well written poem, they being fever and enlivened. These two words made this word painting explode with vibrant word color. There definitions I have posted.

fever |ˈfēvər|
noun
An archaic definition for bring about a high body temperature or a state of nervous excitement in someone.
enliven |enˈlīvən|
verb [ trans. ]
make (something) more entertaining, interesting, or appealing.
And your ending, “Amen to the heart, which bestows such a gift”, was unique! It reminded me of a seal of approval, I was impressed.

Blessings, Laughing-Bear

This is very beautiful, it touches my heart in a very soft place..
It is inspiring, inspiring so as to remind me of a bards sonnet
I once read, just as a scene such as you have painted came in to
my own personal view...

First Audrey speaks:

"Whisper again to me in verses of
Amber hue the words of sweet love’s lessons
long gone from this heart rent in two."

And the bard answers:

"Sweet love, renew thy force; be it not said
Thy edge should blunter be than appetite,
Which but to-day by feeding is allay'd,
To-morrow sharpened in his former might:"
(Shakespeare-sonnet 56)

Thank you for the poem.
