Pensieve of Lies

Pensieve of Lies

A Poem by Audrey Howitt

an odd kind of tension binds lip to cheek

in the war of love’s words

tumbling over themselves in the dark

I feel the tension grow as I wonder

about the whys of emotive context construed

within a map uncharted

even in the abyss of unknowing

and I am not sure why I wander from room to room

pulling at my lip

and wishing my cheek hid better lies

in an odd way it makes me feel better--

the lies find their pocket

safe to slip out

when the telling of them

is most unexpected

at least by me

Fascinating how your awareness, and physical manifestation of those lies--that curious nervous reaction to them--is amazingly close to "tongue in cheek"; a term which, after all, simply indicates the presence of "amusing" lies.
Extraordinary work, Audrey!

your very much welcome
We never know what our words are going to be. Sometimes they resist utterance; somtimes they slip out in most unexpected forms.

"in the abyss of unknowing" conjures all sorts of feelings, memories, and thoughts within me.
"an odd kind of tension binds lip to cheek" grabs my mind and makes me think of how stunning and sad it is to get a kiss on the cheek when you want one, or are used to one, on the lips. That tense time when you just don't know what that means or why.

This review is coming from my own personal files of relationships so I may be missing what you intended...but, from where I read it mean worlds to me. You always write with such feeling, and do it in an extraordinary way.

I don't know why but every good poem that doesn't rhyme makes me happy. Just listening to the writers feelings. And you're on of them. 100/100
