Crossroads

Crossroads

A Poem by Gerhardus Retief

In the back of my mind I can...
Trust has grown its own dysfunctional eyes,
after the betrayal from under the liar's disguise.
Barely even a lifetime's memory eats its way out,
deep down that victory is a stinging suicidal shout.

Become the stranger nobody can define,
yet the murderous nature envelope the mind.
Sanctify the crimson blooded beater from anyone,
fragmented divine answers can't even hide from the sun.

Fragments of blame will swallow one's hatred into a crust,
but misery is not where one should bury the past in the dust.
In the emptiness of ruined love to the mercy of the stare,
countless nights spent with nothing for aging the tear.

Now see the hungry hounds come stalking the open sore,
engulfed in the bittersweet scent of a broken core.
Muted time will not die unless the stench of lies rise,
changing a part of the future into a shimmering surprise.
...in the front of my heart I can't.
