Our Chess Game

Our Chess Game

A Poem by Gerhardus Retief

In the two faced chess, pawns are assembled so they can crawl to sacrifice.
Both sides move them forcefully, demented into the middle of war. Sign of determination.
Rooks at the edges of the world would defend on demand.
Staying in the motion watching one to another person's decision. Sign of unspoken uncertainty.

Bishops whisper to the one redundant ear, a lie for either King or Queen.
Merely a distraction to confuse the checkered tan of pattern. Sign of hidden betrayal.
Black knight to white knight same goal into finding the spontaneous spy among the ranks.
Only to find failure in doing so will lead them into slaughtering their own kind. Sign of fear.

The Queens ache for an apprehended murder.
Merely to blind the definition of loyalty to defend their Kings. Sign of desperation.
Kings even fearless they know one must fall one loss awaits the other sibling.
How far they go to conquer can be an unprojected journey. Sign of forgotten love.
